Excellent. It always amazes me how fire appliances from far and wide are sent to incidents such as this. I once saw an appliance from Croydon attend a large fire in Barking.
@Biffo1262
@Biffo1262 Жыл бұрын
Simply because do many appliances and stations have been cut due to 'efficiencies' as the Mayor at the time put it....one discredited politician and master liar....Boris Johnson. Think how thin on the ground fire appliances are when things like this happen and you also have spate conditions such as the drought conditions and your house catches fire! You will be waiting..... waiting......and waiting some more. Politicians look at numbers and think why do we need two fire engines in a station? Well the answer is obvious to a primary school student but politicians think in percentages i.e. 70% one pump will do so cut appliances and men by 30%. Then.....the inevitable happens and you need more than the original 100% you had so you pull I fire appliances from far and wide, robbing Peter to Pay Paul. The 'Peter' puts in a rather large bill, so the have to borrow from Mum and so it goes on.....spate conditions which require far more than your available resources mad worse by bean counters who can't see last the ends of their noses but award themselves huge pay rises and put in fairy tale expense claims. Spate conditions are here to stay as the last three years have proved but still they cut emergency service budgets. Someone has to pay for Boris' wallpaper!

Firstly the person recording criticising motorists for not going through red lights please read the Highway Code which requires a police officer to instruct you to do so to prevent you from being liable for prosecution - don’t forget there are a lot of enforcement cameras out there. In such a location I would have expected the first police unit to have blocked The Mall towards Trafalgar Square at the junction with Horseguards as this would have created the ideal parking spot for the first LFB resources seeking to set up in The Mall or Spring Gardens. It is a known fact that often the line of fire appliances will build up and this job even from a distance was clearly going to be one requiring a large presence. They could have pulled further forward if the police and LAS were not in the way allowing traffic to pass behind around the Square. With Charring Cross Police Station a short stroll away I was surprised that larger numbers of officers were not been deployed quicker to assist with road closures and diversions and that better use of the Met Police road closed and traffic arrow signs was not initiated earlier. It was also clear that there would need to be a closure of Cockspur St and most likely Pall Mall East from an early stage. A closure of this and no doubt better communications to responding units a designated RVP could have been declared for the officers and support unit RVP which could have freed space nearer the scene - could the cars not have parked on the island with the Monument to King Charles I allowing those appliances to be nearer the scene where their equipment would be more likely needed? Likewise I don’t understand why LAS set up on The Mall when Cockspur Street would have allowed easier access and egress reducing the likely conflict of fire hoses everywhere. This is not a criticism of the services on scene but merely a pointing out that this presents opportunities for reflective learning about scene set up and management that could be useful in dealing with future incidents. I have over the years seen many similar issues with other incidents but each one should have a debrief what went well, what could we improve? Could we have managed traffic better around the incident to reduce congestion which could delay other resources that are attending? We will never be perfect but we can always improve if we look at history/ past events and learn from them.

The utter ignorance on behalf of so many people here who do not get out of the way of emergency vehicles is just astounding and as for that cyclist who weaver between two emergency vehicles. Words fail me and so many of these incredibly stupid people need heavy fines to teach them a lesson. If you see a vehicle on blues and twos get the F out of the way. It could one day be you who needs the emergency services.

why so many expensive cars for the "fire officers" or is just the LFB way of giving out company cars rather than having more engines??

BMW, Mercedes etc are nothing out of the ordinary here, they aren't necessarily concidered as luxury car. Thus many chiefs will have one as their private car which they bought themselves; Also many marked emergency vehicles are based on e.g. BMW

the longtime fire buff in me is screaming “TRAFFIC CONTROL!!!!” over the amount of traffic flowing through the scene. sorry if it’s being the dumb Yank, i know it’s a hugely important intersection in London but damn that’d never happen in the US in any city i’ve ever been to…traffic issues elsewhere or not you can’t have traffic flowing like that through an active scene especially with pumpers needing hydrants and support apparatus needing access and parking…
@stevesmith7530
@stevesmith7530 Жыл бұрын
The issue is not simply shutting down that intersection, which is a very busy and important one, but given the layout of London streets, that soon backs up traffic in a huge area which does more to hamper response. It is not even as simple as responders being able to drive the wrong side of what you may think of being potentially empty streets, as they will not be so empty as traffic uses alternate ways round the block to rejoin their original route at the earliest possible opportunity. I speak as someone who does drive response in the city on occasion, and it does not take much at all to really mess up traffic flow. Even a broken down bus can create standing traffic over a huge area.

@@bostonrailfan2427 Did you read what the guy said? Resources can't get to the scene if the surrounding roads are gridlocked. Traffic control is a fine art. Sometimes just shutting everything does more harm than good.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting Жыл бұрын
@@bostonrailfan2427 it would as well put lives in danger if you get entirely gridlocked traffic in not only a small borough but an entire area of the city, slowing down emergency vehicles both heading to this scene and also to other incidents or hospitals. They have literally no chance to get through once traffic clogs the area. I've seen that kind of issue both in the Bavarian state capital of Munich, where the one-sided shutdown of a highway due to an accident caused a traffic collapse in half of the city area, and I also saw it in New York City where backed up traffic had an intense impact onto response times of emergency vehicles, taking longer to only get from one Avenue to the next Avenue than it takes us to go all the way from the station to the scene miles away.
