Hi Dan. In factories where they have fast moving blades that can 'freeze' under fluorescent lighting, they simply add an incandescent desk lamp. This stops any strobe effects, keeping the operatives fingers where they belong. This cheap trick should work for you too. Good luck.

That is a such a nice piece of Ichthyiosaur I love it to bits. Strange the way it bends round. What part of the backbone is it, perhaps mid- thoracic?? Its so nice don't sell it buddy unless you must to pay Bill's. You will miss it when it's gone. Make your prep money from fossils found by others, there is no emotial attachment that way. It's so so nice.👍👍👍❤❤❤

Ahhh I know what you mean, I’ve sold some amazing stuff in the past and always kicked myself after, with three kids and losing my job due to the pandemic I think it’s inevitable though. I tell myself when I find a complete one, it’s a keeper :) given all of my single verts away, mainly to families on the beach, seeing a little kids brain implode with excitement is worth it’s weight in gold! I’ve really enjoyed cleaning it and I’ll always have the video, gathering dust on the self or food, mortgage and Lego mini figures for the kids? At this moment in time it’s got to be the latter, it’ll change, planning on building my collection later on in life :)

Love your vids and have just finished watching them all! You’ve inspired me to get a cheap engraver and give it a go, starting on some of my more crappy finds of course. Look forward to the next video and definitely think you need to do some more reviews of your evening tipple!

Beer and fossils, hard to beat!!! Visited Lyme a few times and will definitely be calling back and certainly into Charmouth as well, those little pyrite ammonites are amazing! I live on the coast in South Wales and we have a similar geology with plenty of ammonites but most we find are in solid limestone so don’t know if they’ll prep or how to go about it, will definitely give it a go. Think a few devils toe nails will be getting trashed in the process! @@TheFossilAcademy

I have just found your KZbin channel, awesome! I have been a life long fossil enthusiast, but happy to admit, have not got a clue as to how to find them. My method is find a big rock with a line in it, pick it up and drop it hope it cracks to reveal something. Any tips on improving my neanderthal method? and what's good kit to get to to start attempting to prep them?
@TheFossilAcademy
@TheFossilAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
I think getting a guided fossil walk is the best place to start, there are some really good knowledgeable folk doing them in Lyme and Charmouth, a good guide will really give you a solid base to start from. Knowing the right types of rock is a start but without someone to show you this can be hard to learn by yourself. My top tip is if there is something squashed (an ammonite say) on the outside of a rock, there’s a good chance there might be something on the inside. A good machinist hammer (you can get them at zoro.co.uk) with a wooden handle are perfect. Think mine is around 800grams think that’s around 1.7lbs. Something like that will do better than the cave man approach :)

Excellent video there. Makes my triple verts look tame! Can't wait to get back there in August 👍. Tell me, what make of pen? Did you use the same pen and nib from start to finish? I got a Mannion needle and it takes aaaaaaaages to move a bit of matrix. Keep me coming, great stuff 🦖👏👏👏💥
@TheFossilAcademy
@TheFossilAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers dude, the pen I use is a stock Chicago pneumatic CP-9361, smash the ball bearing support off the top (with it on makes it hard to hold) then I’ve sanded it a bit around the top to make it more ergonomic, smashing off the collar at the top makes the tip less steady though. Then just grind the tip to a sharp point. Stock CP and it’s been going about 15 years now. I am looking into getting Zoic to see if they can improve my pens, either that or get a new set of the low air pressure ones they do which I’ve heard really good things about. See what comes out cheaper.

another winner dan, what a find! personally loved the full prep vid, please dont pre script too much part of the charm of the videos is your randomness and humour, one question do use one of those small grinders (dental style) like the mannion dg on your prep? bugger i mean two questions for a lighter beer whats your opinion of Ringwoods 49 'er ... bugger bugger i'll start again three question, will you be supplying beer on your walks? Good luck dude with the walks and new shop.
@TheFossilAcademy
@TheFossilAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Murry! Naa mate very very rarely use the grinders, well, never since my proxon imploded! If I’m going to use a rotary tool like a proxon or a dremmel it would be with a small diamond disk cutter on the end. Not tried any of the 49 stuff will defo give that a bash! Beers will be available from the brewery! Probs a good idea to wait until after the walks though!

@@TheFossilAcademy ain't it funny... When your learning how to prep with air tools, the advice I was given was, Chisel tip to start for the big bits, needles for the smaller bits back to hammer and needles by hand, then to grind and not use percussive air tools 😳... Oh, and "you never need to air abrade" was another tip 🙄. Watching you work on all manner of fossil and matrix with just one pen and point is enlightening after all the crap everyone else tells us 👍 thanks again for the response mate.
