These are, and the brand as a whole, some of THE best speakers I have ever heard (as you would say), FULL STOP!!! I would have loved that you guys had gotten 5 of them, plus, say a D12 subwoofer, then done the review. I am 100% positive you would get over the styling really fast. IMHO, I love how they look, sans the grills, particularly the patterns on the woofer, and the waveguide. Yet, with all that being said, the ST7 Towers destroy these(no sub required). 🤔 also, I feel like if Andrew were still making films, he'd more than likely mix with these speakers. The line as a whole is cinema grade. If you're into home theater and want to feel as if you're on a sound stage, the Perlisten line is a no-brainer. I own several brands of speakers, which include Goldenear Triton Reference; Spatial Audio X4's, ML ESL 9's, and so on, each loved for different reasons. But if I were shutting it down, Perlisten S7t' s would most likely be where I'd stop. And this is before we even get to the subs...smdh! (Inttersting side note, Dan Roemer, the CEO and head designer at Perlisten, was also at Arendal) I DARE YOU ANDREW, get the S7T's and two D12/15 Subs, and see what happens. Love you guys, and all you do, although you spent WAAAAAY too much time talking about how the speakers looked, keep up the great work, and I look forward to the next video. 👍🏿 Peace ✌️

First and foremost those two are "relationship goals" material. The more I listen to Andrew and Kristi the more I get to hear new technical lingo which I don't understand (let alone, many of those speakers are way above my pay grade -meaning it literally-) and for a reason and yet again I still click on the links from Andrew. I try to learn from you both and then I find myself treating the videos like they're ASMR videos. Love you both. Greetings from Istanbul Turkey :)

I am using these, with a good sub, for 2.1 channel channel home theater, as well as music. They are WAY better than the 5.1 system that they replaced. They are good close to a wall because they are sealed, not ported. This limits the bass extension, but makes them very easy to integrate with a sub. Mine actually sound a little better closer to the wall, even with the TV, which is really cool. Have used both SVS and Rel subs, and both work great. The Perlisten subs would almost certainly be the best if you can and want to spend that much. The Perlisten stands are super heavy and COOL LOOKING, but expensive. They help the appearance quite a bit, and the speakers actually attach to the stands. The looks of the speaker will probably not bother you after a while. If you get black, they kind of disappear in a dark home theater anyway--and as you said they disappear sonically. That is the best part.

You're in my wheelhouse now Andrew. I've personally auditioned Perlisten's S7t, R7t, S5M, R5M, BUT NOT the S4B. I prefer to not use subs in my two channel system, which the S4B definitely require (I do use two subs in my HT system). Conclusion, in my opinion Perlisten speakers are true high end Home Theater speakers, but not necessarily marketable or appealing to those of us who can afford $10K high end speakers. Whoever is considering the S4B, I encourage to audition Paradigm Persona 3F. Sonically, and aesthetically they are superior to S4B. The Persona line has beryllium tweeter and midrange driver, additionally their soundstage is world class. Thank you Andrew and Kristi for continuing to provide your viewers with an extensively variety of Audio and Video product reviews.

Yes I agree Perlisten speakers are on the pricey side and most likely not affordable for most people, but I must say they are, IMO, quite a beautifully designed speaker and the looks are quite appealing to me. Just an FYI, I’ve heard some reputable industry insiders say that the Perlisten CEO, Dan Roemer was the engineering and design mind behind Arendal Sound’s flagship 1723 series speakers.
@joes3800

I have been very curious to hear any Perlisten speakers. They seem to be the best of all worlds due to both design and hype: neutral, great but controlled dispersion, an *almost* concentric tweeter and midrange to improve imaging, extremely transparent and articulate and punchy, and all while being superior to nearly any other speaker brand at any price when it comes to dynamic range (especially for their larger speakers.) The hype compels me to want these as my end-game speakers, but I would really want to listen to them first before even thinking about saving up to spend that kind of money.

Well, while I cannot make any comments on the sound quality, on looks alone, I'd take the Perlistens, especially in white as shown, over the 805 D4 any time. Visual style and acoustic perfection (as far as possible) are two reasons people buy speakers. But if you buy a pair of speakers based on looks alone you can miss out on the best sound. One of the reasons B&W or Perlisten have a good sound is the design of the front panel. Essentially, B&W, Perlisten and others utilize a technique to minimize the amount of wood surrounding the speakers removing as much as possible along with smooth rounding and tapering the wood away from the front panel to open up the sound. In-room frequency responses are better and this can enlarge the sound stage. I know this is probably not interesting to Kristi but it does explain why some speakers incorporate this design into their speakers. So many things can effect speakers but this is a design enhancement that design engineers can provide for out of the box. Little things can have big impact on sound quality. I saw a real time frequency response graph change drastically in a speaker face design when they moved the tweeter position placement by mere millimeters so a lot of engineering design goes into the speaker box. Unfortunately, this produces some strange looking speakers. And MERRY CHRISTMAS.

A large majority do prefer speakers to blend in with their decor so white, black or traditional wood finishes are preferable. Others like them to be the centrepiece of the room and extravagant finishes and designs are desired. I think in this particular case I am not a fan of this design though the white doesn’t bother me. I do like unusual finishes though. I bet these sound amazing though. I owned a McIntosh amp and a CD/SACD player in the past and damn, did I love those being the centrepiece of the room…even more than the speakers. Would be nice if more manufacturers explored more unique finishes and designs…

I thought the Sopras sounded very close to the Utopias and couldn't justify the price difference between the two lines (but there was a pretty significant improvement between the Kantas and Sopras)... unfortunately no perlisten dealers near me so I couldn't compare but everyone I have spoken to have said these perlistens are close in performance to the Sopras.. you guys seem to like the Focals so figured I would throw that out there

Totally agree. Seems like the Sopra bookshelf is the closest Focal bookshelf that these should have been compared to

Nice review. I’d be curious to hear those in person. Agreed on the styling of 805 D4s compared to these. It took me a while to get used to the neutrality of Bowers and Wilkins 800s series versus 700s. It has grown on me, but your comment that the 805 D4s add a little bit of a color leans me to thinking between that and the styling, they are probably still my next pair of speakers for my integrated amp.

Assuming the design choices relate to solving acoustic problems (like diffraction), how much performance are you two willing to give up for a speaker to go from being acceptable looking to great looking? It’s an issue I run into a lot because the best speakers are often… not beautiful. Then I listen to them and I think… okay, I can deal with that. My wife, not so much.

I loved listening to this speaker, like I say in the review, I'm not sure I've heard a better monitor, but I did not like seeing them out in our room. They look like street lights or f-ed up stormtrooper helmets etc. I would rather physically look at Revel Studio 2 speakers (and I don't think they're the most beautiful either), but for me, looks matter --especially when spending a TON of money!

Although not nearly as expensive depending on model. Have you consider reviewing Studio Electric’s M4 or much larger M5 speakers? The M4’s run around $3000 for a pair. The M5 $6700 for a pair. Would be interested in your opinion on either of these speakers. They seem to be more within an obtainable range for audiophiles. Anyhow, thanks to another great year of reviews. Keep up the great work. It is always great to get both opinions on products.

I am not a fan of the look of those SB Acoustics "checkboard" woofers, or the overall design of these speakers, but performance is ultimately all that matters...would love to hear these things.

The drivers are NOT SB acoustics. Every Perlisten driver is made by Perlisten for Perlisten in Perlisten’s factory. The cone material is from the same manufacturer but that is the only similarity

I'm considering buying them but not sure about the price, though they cost half, I still not sure they worth that kind of money. I think they should cut prices by half, and then they'll match the reality, they are not good looking and they sound very natural. I wasn't blown away by them when listening.

While they are a little on the weird design side! I do love that checkered look on the cone! Stamp it it's January best of!!!! That price is way out of bounds even if I had the money $10,000 I could have custom Cornwall's for that price (I believe). While watching the review on the big screen I looked up the other colors and the natural wood look seemed to look better! I'm not a fan of that front piece bulging out so far from the actual cabinet. 😱 But that's me! I appreciate that ending as always great video...

As they say in the Big Lebowski, "Mark it Dude!" Definitely on the list for best of 2023, no doubt! But yeah, for 10K you could have custom Cornwalls, you could have two pairs and maybe even a Heresy and do home theater 😉

Good job with the review. I'm sure they sound terrific, but I agree that for that kind of money, the styling isn't appealing enough. I also want near 20 hz extension if I'm paying $5K and up (these are twice that). Looks like the Perlisten guys are "no nonsense" types who want to build the best sounding speakers and appearance is a secondary consideration. I'd suggest Joseph Audio's Pulsar as a stand mount that looks appealing and sounds great as well. Hoping that Perlisten listens to the customers and improves their aesthetic approach. Their subwoofers look good and get rave reviews. Would love to hear all of their products.

I actually really like the looks. I wish checkerboard drivers were more common. Five figures makes my brain start flipping through the Crutchfield catalog, designing entire home theaters that could be had for the price, but that's my issue, not the speaker's.

For the price they are asking, the Perlisten should offer a wood finish. A lot of people will still opt for the black version since they will be in dedicated home theaters. But anyone spending that kind of money for speakers (easily 50k) for home theater is clearly building a world class theater and wouldn't even consider these bookshelves except as rear speakers. We're talking $10,000 for a speaker that is not used as much in movies (more in gaming where there are ambient surround sounds all the time).

In all of these reviews we keep hearing the Wharfedale Elysian as an alternative. I hope Wharfedale is hearing this and comes up with a new line that shares a lot of the Elysian's characteristics in a smaller form factor and at a lower price similar to what Q Acoustics did with the 50 and the 500. I think a speaker that has the finish and the sonic quality of the Elysian for $3,000-$3,500 would be something that people would consider seriously especially if it has wood finishes. Especially now that B&W has priced themselves out of contention with the 700 S3 series.
