Actually the keys are numbered because it's a type of notation called the numbered musical notation, which is used to score music for that instrument. I think Japan started using that scoring system in the Meiji era, and it's still used today for traditional instruments. Chinese traditional instruments also use this kind of musical notation. It's called 簡譜 (jian pu) in Chinese. Just thought it'd be interesting to share!

@@backbeatmusicacademy8078 actually, the taishokoto was the basis for the first Indonesian "translations" of the instrument which became the bulbul tarang. Both instruments have much in common with the European hummel or hommel. Thanks to immigrants from Northern Europe in the 19th century, that instrument evolved into the Appalachian dulcimer in the US. All instruments like these belong to the bigger family of plank cithers and can be very diverse concerning the number of strings and the shape of the body.

I love XLN Audio, probably my favorite music software company. I mean... they DID make Addictive Drummer after all, my favorite VST plugin of all time.

The word for that is "stop" the string. That instrument sounds so familiar. It must have been used for film scoring in the past. Very rich sound.

"Fret" is the correct word for this. The clavichord uses the same word, where some clavichords have multiple notes sharing the same string, the note is "fretted" by the blade hitting in different spots
