I am originally from South Africa, and I am glad to see such a beautiful thunderstorm video from the city where I was born. (I've lived in the U.S. since I was almost two years old).

Commenting FRI 10/21/22 at 515am EDT...Incredible lightning barrage thus seen from so far away from home..in your being in Johannesburg, S.A. and incredible cloudscape too.....along with the rainshafts and the like.....My good KZbin-met Tstorm buddy, Tom B sent me this awesomed video via Email...as he and I first met 14 years ago...My own biggest lightning barrage video dates way back to 7/28/89...over 33 years ago..and it is on my KZbin-channel...I also got some huge thundercrashes along with it...

Thanks for all views and the kind comments from back home ;-) I especially love how many of you appreciate it despite the fact that this was filmed on a cellphone with no tripod. - On this gorgeous day in December 2013 the skies just suddenly turned grey and the next moment we were treated to a spectacular thunderstorm which spared no FX! We were about to leave SA for 7 months and as I stood there getting absolutely drenched -I realized just how much I would miss about Johannesburg and that this may very well be the last thunderstorm untill the end of 2014! (-Turns out it wasn't, there has been the odd thunderstorm in Thailand but nothing like back home). So I decided that a video clip captured without a tripod etc, would still be a better treatment for feeling homesick than none at all. The sound and visuals do not really do it justice, but it turned out better than I expected. (Thank you Samsung!)

This really makes you understand why our ancestors thought there were gods fighting in the sky. Even with our understanding of how it works we find it fascinating and enthralling. I love the beauty of nature.

Wow what a breath taking lightning storm. Would love to have seen that in person. Here in Canada we get our fair share of severe thunderstorms across the prairies, but sadly only very seldomly on the west coast.

Nate Smith Thank you Nate, we have been away for a while so I am eagerly anticipating the first big rain of this season. Though this time I will ask Dave to capture it on a SLR that is mounted to a tripod. If this happens, we will be happy to share a clip that would do more justice to experience.

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic capture of a rather intense thunderstorm. You captured it well, panned (movement) covered the entire view, not too fast, just right. And the talking was just minimal but added to the event. Once again a fantastic capture. I very much enjoyed watching. Thank you

It was a matter of grab the nearest device with a lens and hit record :) So thank you for the kind words, though I cringe when I look at the technical qualities of this clip. Altogether it turned out more stable than I thought it would... (No tripod & smoking with the hand NOT holding the new phone is not a recipe for pro's ;-)

Sorry, in slight fits of laughter on hearing "oh stunning" after each bolt of lightning... love it! :-)
@TheSpiralWorx9 жыл бұрын
deeperdish If my comments could make you laugh that hard then all the better for it. -The scoring and script could certainly be crowdsourced / improved in whatever way much to be desired for , I agree;-) A tripod and an actual camera will go a long way in removing the 'blair witch' treatment , which can only be more pleasing on the eyeballs. Now, deeperdish, tell me- how deep is your dish?
@heatherstub Жыл бұрын

so do I :'( Thailand do get its share of lightening and sudden heavy downfalls of rain which often stops as abruptly as it started. Tropical thunderstorms do not appear to first set the scene, with darkening skies, lightening flashes and slow , sweeping downpours amidst spectacular flashes that run across the skies like the wild, untamed forces of nature that these lightening flashes are :) I assume from your comment that you to left Africa?
@MoragBaxterpixiegirl9 жыл бұрын
Yes 13 years ago. But it is such a beautiful place, that nowhere else makes you feel the same. No place has it's breathtaking quality. No place lies so deep in your heart that when your awake you compare everything and everywhere to it, and when you sleep it fills your dreams.

The only other place that rivals these thunderstorms in Africa is here on the plains of North America in tornado alley! The lightning these tornadic supercell thunderstorms where I live can put out is apocalyptic.

You know, I totally aim to please all those who grace my path, because life is short and we can all benefit from an atmosphere that is proactive, kind and which promotes dialogue that stimulate ideas, provides meaningful feedback , (be it congruent with those of others or not).
