There are many reasons why I am attracted to your videos and I would say the number one reason is your craftsmanship. The new shelter that you are working on is, as far as I’m concerned, very well done and one of the, perhaps what might be considered trivial things that you do, Has to do with the way you pull your sled walking through the woods. Usually, what is considered the proper way of pulling the sled, has to do with the way the ropes are connected from your backpack to the sled. They are just as you have them; crisscrossed. You guys are great. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy them immensely.

Hi David, we did have the shelter fully lined last year, we have a few videos on our channel. It looks pretty wild fully lined. We are going to put some on the ceiling and see how it is now that it is going to be insulated. We may add more to the walls if it's not building up enough heat.

Consider the following: Take some of those large dropped trees and cut them to a size for some strong vertical walls for a shelter of some sort. Should be able to handle some heavy roof and snow loads. Plus thick wood wall insulation. Could even slightly bury the ends in the ground for more stability.

Hi guy's, another fantastic video as always. Looking at your shelter, I've had an idea. Have you thought about adding some extra height to the log wall behind the fire, and then extending the roof which would totally enclose the shelter? Also how about building a stone fireplace and adding a chimney? Now that would keep you guys toasty no matter what the temperature was! Best wishes to you both from the UK x 👍.
@IamOutdoorsy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Open eye! We'll likely be building up the reflector walls and may add another for more coverage. I like to keep it a bit open to the elements because I like looking out at the forest. I've thought about building a large fireplace. Just not sure on how to get mortar for it.
@MrNed095 жыл бұрын
@@IamOutdoorsy Hi, thanks for replying to my comment. If you want mortar, you could either use clay from the bank of a river or pond, or simply mix soil with water. I don't know what the lay of the land is like, but if you have any natural chalk around, you can burn it to make lime! In the old days people used lime and horse hair mixed. All the best my friend from the UK 👍 😉

Love your videos. Just a thought... If you got a piece of sheet aluminium (say 8" x 10") and bent one edge over at 1" so that it made it rigid, I suspect it would make a great tool for pushing the moss in place. Hi from Sydney, Australia, Land of the Free, Home of G'Day.

Hi there, there are 3 main reasons. 1) It's an evergreen forest so we'd rather not build a fire in dry conditions (not a necessity but we do enjoy a nice campfire). 2) There are so man black flies and mosquitoes in the summer at that spot that it'd drive us nuts. 3) We do try to go camping every weekend and love canoeing/kayaking so we tend to go to new spots in the summer. Cheers Anne!

3 observations: 1. I've noticed in all your builds, that your bed is only 1 log height off the ground. You'd be far more comfortable it it were higher, say, couch-height. Not only is this more ergonomic and further from the cold ground, but you can now put things under the front edge for quick access. 2. Also noticed that you have super shelter modes in older vids, but not this one. Why not do everything to be as comfy as you can, and have the clear plastic scrolled between two poles (top and bottom edges), to add/remove as needed? 3. For those cold winter nights you definitely want a Nordic Long Fire. Less cutting (calories, dehydration), better warmth that lasts longer and thus not getting up as much. Getting up every 2 hrs is very bad for getting REM sleep. This is where a long fire comes in. Either that, or take turns in getting up every 2 hrs, and thus each of you goes in 4 hr cycles - which is the fair and sensible thing to do. Cheers.
