Awesome & Original Montgomery G&P Glass Elevator - JC Penney - Westminster Mall - Westminster, CA

We have a winner here folks! A department store with an atrium AND a GLASS elevator is nothing short of coolness!! It is quite a rare sight to see this now-a-days. In addition, the fact that the original interior operating panel remains is great! This elevator is properly "modernized." I use the quotation marks because it's simply an ADA slap-on panel on the opposite side. I love this elevator!

The elevator at Westminster Mall's JCPenney store belonged to J.W. Robinson's. Westminster Mall's JCPenney store was originally a J.W. Robinson's store, which closed in 1993 as a result of the chain merging with May Company, which formed "Robinsons-May". The mall also had a May Company store, which stayed open and went for that name change (currently Macy's). Finally later that year, JCPenney replaced the old Robinson's, which kept the scenic elevator. A Macy's store at Puente Hills Mall, formerly another J.W. Robinson's location and later Robinsons-May, also has that scenic elevator in the middle.

Even the mod of this elevator by Innovation is vintage. The Innovation fixtures are more than 25 years old.

I think the slap-on happened when this became JCP. My Aunt Margaret liked this mall. They lived in Placentia but the family's business was on Brookhurst in Huntington Beach. I haven't seen this since I was a little kid but I'm almost positive this store was something else in the 1980s. I remember this vividly for some reason even though I don't remember what I had for lunch earlier today. I'm almost positive it was a Broadway or a Robinson's or a Bullock's or something. I'll look it up later. I have to or I won't sleep, lol...

No way this was on original JCP. Westfield Promenade (now The Promenade) three level anchor was VERY similar to this one.

It’s kind of original, but it got mostly modded in the 90s with Innovation Security fixtures. But one G&P Square car operating panel remains.
