My grandfather (dad's dad) had a standard gauge setup under the Christmas tree that always had metal tinsel on it. I still remember the sparks that happened when it would fall onto the tracks. Also the transformer had the speed control taps on the outside of the case. So much more safe with a ZW.

Some of those old transformers make my jaw drop. :- Yeah, they are much safer now. In fact things are safer now too (thinking tinsel on the tracks). I bet it was fun to see the standard gauge around the tree. Thanks so much for sharing and watching the video. Merry Christmas.

Hi George from Steven in GBW. Go PACKERS!!!!! LOL!!! Back in the 1960s my older cousins up north had S.G. Lionel, but never played, but made wrecks. I tried to get them to run but track was rusty so it just sputtered along with lots of sparks. Ever since I wanted S.G., so I m saving soda cans, and slowly saving. But You need to get a small Go-Pro Camera, because I want to see the view in miniature, I want to see going behind the piano, under the couch, and Through the Hell Gate Bridge. Steven, it would have been good to see that layout with the GoPro. Alas, I did not have it that day. SG sure is beautiful stuff isn't it? I hope some day soon you will get some. Giving me ideas, as I'm inheriting a collection of standard gauge, both original and repro. locos and rolling stock, among them a State Set and four 400E locos. Planning a floor layout this Christmas. Up to this time, been strictly pre and past war Lionel "O" gauge

That sounds like quite a collection you are inheriting. There are certainly some beautiful standard gauge locomotives and you are getting some of the best. @@GfwTrains the Blue 4-6-2 pacific type engine looks to be either a Bing made one or a later carlie and fintch model. They are very rare indeed most being one off hand made pices unlike lionel ' s 400 type engines or Ives Atlantic types

Wow, I never see this lionel standard gauge stuff anymore, but I guess standard gauge is just the G scale of the 1930s... that's probably why you hardly see it anywhere because unfortunately I think lionels G gauge is rather unappreciated, so of course this old stuff is kind of over shadowed.

You know I am not sure if it is live steam or not. There is a great story behind it...unfortunately I do not remember it and I do not want to spread misinformation. That said, I think it was a special one off made for the Worlds Fair in Chicago.
