Back in the day... The Summersville dam had no generator. It's primary mission was flood control. So, in the fall, they would draw down the lake by releasing 2850cfs from these 12 foot diameter tubes at the bottom of the dam. It rained a lot on 9/6/1996, so the next day, we ran the Cranberry & Cherry, then came back to find the dam releasing 7000cfs. It's better use of the hydro power to have a generator there, but... The awesome roar and turbulence of the water before it was tamed by a generator was truly impressive. this was at the upper put-in for the Upper Gauley.
