I feel like we are seeing everybody's ancestors coming alive and living through them through the days of festivals.. playing songs that they all remember and dances that they all enjoyed and the modern-day people get to be transformed😊
I ran into this festival during my bicycle trip through Japan in the 1980s… I remember it being a beautiful and wild night with the cops coming in riot gear to clear us all from the streets around 2 AM… There was an electric energy and a timeless charm, a feminine mystique, and a sense of a musical swelling into the hearts of thousands of participants and observers… A most memorable experience… And I am so glad that these decades later, it is still there, as it has been for centuries… I so miss Japan…

Thanks for sharing your experience! I visited Japan in 2016, a dream trip I had been planning for my entire teen and college years for. Will you go back? I’m considering to do so.
I was living in Tokushima in the Fall of 2001 and got to see the Awa Odori festival!
