Awesome Trout Fishing at Hatchery Creek

Kentucky Afield host Chad Miles joins Brad Redmon at the newly manmade Hatchery Creek for some awesome trout fishing. Hatchery Creek is less than a year old but is already producing quality trout on a daily basis! Brad helped to build the creek and is now a guide for those looking to learn about fly fishing and catching trout in Hatchery Creek.

Hatchery Creek has become a real gem as far as I’m concerned- The banks and surrounding terrain have grown in with vegetation providing a rich habitat with many parts looking and fishing like a spring creek. This video makes HC look like a fish in a barrel situation but the pressure has made a wily bunch of the hatchery Creek trout population and they will test any competent anglers skill set..

This would be a wonderful creek to use the Tenkara rods.

I thought so too and it is a really good place to use a tenkara rod. The problem is when I hooked two giant rainbows they just broke me off after a little fight. In my opinion the potential to catch bigger fish than a regular tenkara rod can handle is the reason to use a conventional fly rod for ease of landing fish. Unless you have a guy with a big ass net like the dude in the video to net for you.

Are they wild trout or are they raised and then released? I love the idea of a man made stream can anyone point me in the right direction on how it was made please.

What is a wild trout? How long does it take for a stocked trout to become "wild"?

Ben Mangus a wild trout is what it sounds like “wild” which means it occurred naturally never from a hatchery just simply “put there by Mother Earth”

The beginning of the creek is from the Wolf Creek National Hatchery, where trout are raised and released. However, once released, trout will continue to swim back up creek to spawn, so there is a combination of "farm" trout as well as wild trout. Hope this answers your question. Trout are not native to this creek though, if that is what you are wondering.

Generally you don't want to set the hook so hard on a 10"in. trout you rip it's lips off.

That's true. They use to give my wife's pa a hard time cause they were trout fishing and he done a bass hookset and brought in a pair of trout lips. No joke.

Because single barbless hooks with tied flys decrease the catch and release mortality rates from the corn chuckin lure dunkin yahoos.

This whole fishing experience looks very contrived. I'm not saying it bad, or I would never fish there, or any kind of elitist BS, I'm just saying that it isn't quite the same -and not as great as wild fish in a wild stream- no judgment just saying. I think it is a great improvement over what was there before. I'm just that this isn't the kind of fishing that excites me.

It appears to be a great place to take an adult or child and teach them fly-fishing. It appears you really do not need waders or just hip boots would do. That is what makes it a fine place to go.

The only excitement I get from trout fishing is after I get them in and put a 7/0 hook in it's nostril and throw it back out. Because I know within minutes I'll have a giant largemouth. That's exciting.

All fish in the stream are there naturally, meaning they came up from the Cumberland River. You should try it sometime.
