Yes horizontal lightning like that is real. You see it a lot in southern states in the US in the summer time. Sometimes it doesn't even thunder or rain and when that happens we call it "heat lightning" because it usually happenes when it's extremely hot. But technically it's just an electrical storm. But yes, it's totally real.

I've never seen lightening like that either but I have been WAY too close to an electrical storm that I got many photos from my porch where the lightening was a red almost pink!
