If you staple some burlap to a cut fence post and coat It with slum gum sling a rope over a tree limb and lift it up it makes a great swarm trap and all you have to do is lower it and shake it in a box then pull it back up in the tree!!

I don't know if this is how the word came about... but beekeepers use to keep bees in hollow tree sections called bee gums. Many of these were actually from Sweet gum and other Gum family trees. Perhaps they just added the word slum to it for the "junk" our of the Gum. Here is some Bee gums. Very common practice in the South back many years ago! i.pinimg.com/originals/89/d1/4d/89d14dab2fd3403fef34243f706ee9b0.png?epik=dj0yJnU9cE9Damd6bmM3cGQ1Q0xCMW1Yb3ZiWHQ3Z2Q3WElpOEYmcD0wJm49LVY4N09hUF9EQnRBWUVNMElFQmx3QSZ0PUFBQUFBR0FYSUJZ

I knew a bee keeper that, after he did the first cleaning of the wax, used a series of sheets to remove the last bits. He used a removable band of some kind to hold the sheet firmly in place over a large plastic trash can. He had cut away part of the lower trash can, or barrel perhaps it was, with a 5 gallon bucket he could remove underneath to catch the wax. He melted the mostly clean wax and then poured it through these several layers of sheets. Because the wax was hot, it did not clog in the sheets. The resulting wax was pristine. He then took the 5 gallon bucket and poured the wax into his moulds. I think he used cake pans. I love inventors!

I started using a homemade solar wax melter, it involves a aluminium roasting pan with a bunch of pinholes in one end (Strainer) and a basket made of 1/8 " hardware cloth, a cooler with old window glass cover and a bread tin catch container. The comb debris mostly stays in the basket and the rest is stopped at the strainer. Perfect clean wax after one day in the summer sun. Load the solar melter and walk away, no tedious straining.

Absolutely the way to go. Mine was a wood box lined in aluminium sheet and encases in 3 inch polystyrene insulation panel. The door was double glazed using thin greenhouse glass. 3 filter levels Coarse hardware cloth, then perforated zinc fly screen and finally 2 layers of fine linen. Gravity did all the work and the clean wax collected in a pan at the bottom. The top filters scraped clean easily and the cloth filters were cleaned in hot water to remove wax and crud. Had to stop years ago when i started getting anaphylactic reactions. If your collector had a copper outlet pipe and tap , you could drain off the wax into convenient moulds without even opening the door. You could easily re-purpose an old shop fridge with glass doors - already well insulated.

Beekeeping must bee good! Hawaii! Nice! Hope you had a great vacation! I can imagine you at the beach passing the lifeguard as he yells, “hey kid! Slow down!” It was great to see how others are doing their wax recovery. Our recovery is not nearly so sophisticated. We built our own double boiler out of a food safe 55 gal. Drum and some sheet steel. We put in similar drains but I like that screen that he made…definitely one of those in my future! After making a screw type honey pump I thot that the same thing would work with pumping hot melted wax through a set of staged micro filters to end up with almost white wax. It sells for a bit more.

I use a 5 gallon paint screen for removing the finer particles. I doubt that it's 10 microns but it removes the majority of the slum gum. I put the strainer in the 5 gallon bucket, it's designed for them, then I lift it out and let the wax drain through. I can see how letting the wax separate out and float to the top of the slum gum will get more wax out as he showed. Thanks for this video.

here we dont use filter socks we use water/honey bucket that are conical it helps getting the cake /cheese out once steam melted the wax is mixed with water so as time goes (we slow down the cooling with insulation so decantation last longest and does its best job of collecting all the dust/propolis/polen/slumgum into the water that sits under the melted wax ;))

Cool process.I imagine it cost a bit to get that Maxant melter all the way from Massachusetts. When I was a teenage,I worked in a fast food restaurant and every night after closing we would siphon the hot grease in the fryolators through a filter sock just like that.I presently use a cone shaped grease filter for my wax after it has gone through a solar melter.The solar melter has a coarse screen basket lined with paper towels to catch the slumgum.

You guys must have access to loads of wax. I I made a solar melter out of a shallow wood box (painted black inside) with support bars for a tray and squished up small mesh (like chicken wire) and the wax melts and filters through the wire and is collected at the bottom of the sloped tray. The whole thing is covered with a single pane of window glass (old exterior window). Keep in mind don't get it all too hot. Sure there a videos on KZbin about these.

Melt it all back down in salt water and let it cool. The salt water should pull the sediment to the bottom as the wax solidifies. I do that for separating my wax and tallow. He could have added a bit more water to that tank and he may have gotten those tiny bits left in the screener.

Then pour good wax off the top drain. Then add more water for the slum gum turn off cool. Pull the disk of wax. It comes out like the video. The tank gets used for everything. Older video, so,apologies for asking a question now! But is there a reason why the screen was not inserted earlier, while skimming the wax out with the jug. Just to push the slumgum down and get a head start on the reclamation process? seems like you could do it then, skim the wax. Add extra wax scraps and more water and go again to reclaim?
@kamonreynolds

Thanks for watching and commenting. A lot of the slum is very light and with the disruption of inserting the screen it pushes a lot of it thru and above the screen and it won't sink back down thru the small holes. There may be a better method out there yet to be discovered. I am using Thornemfg.com 25 gallon tank and their 8 gallon tank with their 2 valve system which is designed for wax rendering

Hi Kamon, the slumgum could possibly provide another revenue stream as food for wax moth larvae :) People breed wax moth for the larvae as live feed for reptiles...lizards, frogs etc. Over here in the UK I had an enquiry from such a person asking about my old comb etc, for that purpose although with only 30 colonies I didn't follow up with it. Perhaps it may be something for you to look into for your business.

I use a double boiler system. large pot with boiling water. then place a 2and pot inside the first that has boiling water. 2and pot put 2 inches of water in first. then place your wax cappings or comb wax in a 5 gallon paint strainer. Tie end closed with string leave string long enough to pull the strainer out. then with a gloved hand squeeze the wax out. Remove 2and pot from first set aside and let cool over night. remove wax next day. discard dirty water. if u wish to have super clean wax. repeat process with 2 paint strainers. paint strainers cast about $3.00 at Ace Hardware or home depot. pots can be obtained from Walmart. fir around $10.00 make sure to get one one size smaller that will fit into the larger one. and a $10.00 hot plate. do this outside. I put one empty deep frame around the hot plate and larger pot. put 2and pot inside first. put wax in 2nd pot . then fill first pot with water . Turn on hot plate to around 4. water will heat up. also put some water in 2and pot about 2 inches. let heat for about 2 hours and wax is ready. remove and squeeze out wax. remove 2nd pot from boiling water let cool over night. I use this method in Montana

Wait... what... What part is illegal in Tennessee? Leaving out wax for bees to rob out?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, combs and wax. American foul brood spread is the concern. I believe Alabama is the same while some neighboring states don't have that law.

I don’t get the law against letting bees rob the cappings. Is it also illegal to let bees rob wet supers after extracting? Or open feeding syrup?
