Hey Colin, Pat here from the Toronto area. I use a plastic Lazy Susan that I got at the dollar store. I screwed a larger piece of 1/4” plywood to the top and I use it all the time for spray painting my smaller projects. If it gets broken, go buy a new one. Mine is, I think 4 yrs old now.

Glue tips: get a silicone trivet to use as a work surface when you glue. Most glues will wipe off cleanly. Rub a little Vaseline on the threads of your glue bottles and tunes, and the lids will not stick to them. When using hot glue, get a set of silicone BBQ gloves and cut the fingers off to use as thimbles, no burns!

@7:20 that CA glue trick is awesome!! And @8:35, I just use silicone brushes. Not only do they work well, but pulling the glue off is oddly satisfying. Just like getting glue off of your fingers - oddly satisfying!

For spreading glue, i usually just use a piece of an old hacksaw blade, with the coarser teeth. It spreads the glue much like a notched tile trowel. This method tends to leave just the right amount of glue behind, no globs, no glue starved areas and minimal squeeze out. Very easy to rinse off when done, unlike a brush. You can just snap them to whatever length you want with a couple pairs of pliers.

Love these tips. Please keep them coming. I made a Lazy Susan to display and work on my Bonsai Trees. When I was finished making it my wife took and it is now in the middle of our dining room table ~ LOL

I watched your explanation about using mending plates. I am at a loss as to what you are using them for?

I like the silicone brushes for glue. You don’t even have to wash them off, let the glue dry and the glue just slides off.

I keep many of those little tubs along with plastic containers. I clean them with hot water and a drop or two of Dawn and put them in my shop. I use them for parts trays, stains and small amounts of paint. They are often ‘throw aways’.

I use cling film ( Saran wrap I believe you call it ) for wrapping brushes to use again for the next day or two.

Press n Seal works great. cover the top of a can of paint seal it around the top with a tight rubber band and it lasts for a long time.

One more tip for Caulk tubes to keep them clear - instead of wire nuts or all the other gadgets, just wrap painters tape around the ned of the tube. Easy to install, easy to remove and very cost effective.
@rrrosecarbinela2 жыл бұрын
Looking at your tube holder... if you make the cut all the way through the wood, you can use the wood as a squeezer to get all the contents out of the tube. I have a toothpaste squeezer that works like that.

Thanks for the tips! Gave me an idea for another use of my old medicine/pill bottles. After wrapping a small brush with a moistened cloth or paper towel, stick it into a pill bottle to keep the damp wrapper from drying out as fast.
@TheLovelyMissBeans2 жыл бұрын
I use my old medicine bottles for all kinds of things in the shop and the craft room. Little nails and screws (obviously) as well as shelf pins, hooks and other small hardware pieces. I keep neodymium magnets in a couple, as well as some double sided 3m adhesive bits, and sawdust sometimes. In the craft room I keep needles and pins, beads, buttons, snaps, chalk, paper clips and staples...etc...

Thanks for another enjoyable informative video. Plano makes all kinds of storage/organizing containers and boxes. They are usually in the fishing section at most department stores. I use them all over the shop. They have systems with a box that different sizes of matching "snap top" containers fit into. I use a soft-sided Plano box that holds my pin nailer, pins, spare tips, oil, etc. It's even the same bright green color as the nailer. My granddaughter recently got interested with decorating her fingernails. The storage boxes in the make-up area of the store were $20 to $30 dollars. The exactly configured Plano box, in the fishing department, but in a different color, was $13.

I bought my "Plano" tackle box back in 1987, for keeping my art supplies in college. It costed $25.00. Still have it, still use it.

Here's a tip, not always for woodworking, that I have used for years. When installing bolts/nuts, just put a small amount of silicone caulk on the threads. This acts as a great thread locker when/if loctite is not available. Much less cost and usually always available around the shop. Even helps with rust control.

Shoe goo works great for attaching magnets to metal surfaces. I use the little plastic cups from restaurants for finishes and small amounts of paint. I think they are called ramekins.
@petergosney64332 жыл бұрын
Just a tip, on the tip. There are many plastic cups that will “reject” polyurethane and epoxy in this way, but the quickest and most comprehensive way to clean them out is with a blast of compressed air. Well, at least Australian air works, anyway.

That's because your air is upside down from ours. I'll have to test ours. :)

Plano cases are great. Theyre the same as many tool brands but cost way less. The models I use are "ProLatch" 3600 and 3700 series, theyre only a few bucks each at Walmart. The only downside is you can't latch multiple together, but any box with that feature is going to cost a lot more.
@bluelily82892 жыл бұрын
If you have any concerns about tarnishing, you can get the Plano boxes with the anti-tarnish dividers - I use them for metal jewelry charms, and they work great. They used to be a few dollars more expensive than the regular ones, but they are worth it. I have been using the same dividers for about 5 years now, and they are still working great.

I've got two of the Plano; actually, there are tackle boxes for lures and stuff, but I use mine to keep small computer parts. I have a bunch of screws, and of course, there is a different screw for almost every different thing in a computer, but I can see where they would work great for putting the pins.

As you said, use water based polyurethane, paint etc in the polystyrene yoghurt containers. Never use solvent based products which will disolve the plastic and can make mess.

Sadly, Plano boxes break just as well as the cheaper boxes when Butterfingers drops them on the concrete floor when they are full of stuff (DAMHIK). I find that the larger department stores with fishing sections have house brand tackle trays with the same features as Plano - just make sure you buy the ones with separate catches and snap on hinges, not the one piece ones which fail at the hinge and latch in normal use. Of course if you can find Plano for less buy them, but in my part of the world Plano is hard to find and is often 5+ times the price of the knockoff. With the superglue bottles, squeeze the bottle a little before you you turn it to let the glue come out, then when you tilt it back upright the bottle will suck the glue back in from the tip when you let go of the sides - much fewer blocked tips.

As a side note shoe glue (goop) is great for fixing holes in jeans.
@mikebond63282 жыл бұрын
I used super glue (ca glue) to fix a hole in a pair of jeans while I was wearing them several years ago and it spontaneously combusted. I tried to pat the fire out with my finger and the jeans stuck to my leg and my finger. Two burns later I had learned not to do that again.

Colin, you put dates of purchase on your bottles, but wouldn't it be easier to write down an expiration date. You don't have to pick your brain (calculate) everytime to add up the number of weeks/months etc. to know if it's still good or not. So the date lies in the future and not in the (buying) past. Just a "silly" brainwave from the Netherlands 😉.
