One of the game design classes I took, long ago, we were taught when making a first person game was to make the objects 1.5 times bigger than they are to help maintain a correct sense of size for the player. That could be why these animals appear bigger than they should when manipulating the camera in third person.

I think the biggest factor for non-VR subnautica and misjudging scale is (in addition to the lack of depth perception) the fact that you are floating around. When you are on land in an FPS, your point of reference is the eye-height of your character. This allows you to roughly measure up different objects. When you are swimming you lack the known reference point of your height from the ground. This combined with the lack of depth perception is what makes it hard to realize how big things actually are.
@13thMaiden4 жыл бұрын
Also it's possible that alot of the smaller models are double their actual size that they are supposed to be so that they can be seen better in a one person perspective. Cause let's face it, if the fish we can hold were left at the same size as they reduce to in our hand, we'd not see them until they were RIGHT in our face and making grabbing them nearly impossible in the game. Now the Leviathans and such are probably full scale, as well, we can definitely see them. Notice how you said at about medium sized creatures (rockpuncher, stalker, penwings, ect) they seemed right in size? I think they and all sizes up are at the proper proportions in game. But I think any of the models of fish that we can grab and hold we should measure based on the size in our hands for actually size rather than in water as those are probably doubled for visual reasons in game. But that's my 2¢, I could be wildly wrong about that 😂 I can't explain why the shrimpshark tries to clamp us though. Maybe just it's natural response to opening it's jaw? Baleen whales wouldn't have to open their mouths all the way to filter feed, but they do just because, so maybe it's just something it does while feeding?
@raionshishi82904 жыл бұрын
I agree with the fact that the smaller fish are scaled up so we can visually see them easier in game as they are super tiny and almost impossible to catch without struggling a little, it would be a nightmare trying to catch them if they were actually THAT small, it be just like catching fish in real life with your hands. Everything from medium size up seems to be accurate overall, so i think what you said is completely correct and accurate as i thought the same, and about the Chelicerate using it's mandibles to catch Robin, well actually i think that's a pretty normal reaction, it's as if it's trapping it's prey to only go in 1 direction and that's towards it's mouth, fish don't have hands to defend or hold back but they do have maneuverability and speed. Which makes it easy for the fish to turn around and get out or dodge, the mandibles help trap the fish (like medium sized), tho since Robin can fight back and hold it open it tends to struggle keeping hold of her but still doing damage and exhausting her. Many fish in real life have a certain jaw to trap fish and even some plants are built to have a one way in and no way out type structure and or trap.

First person perspective can definitely make it difficult to get the scale of things, when you're playing ark running around on the beach with dilos they look pretty small, but when you knock one out and go into third person you realize they're just as big as you are, and when you get into the water there are some gigantic creatures, they look big from a distance, but then you slap a saddle on one and see your tiny little character clinging onto it's back, then you realize just how freakishly huge they really are

I feel like this is why there was some slight push to make creatures bigger, because you don't see their true scale while in first person like you do in concept or freecam. Even the leviathans, while huge, and we *know* they're huge, lose their sense of scale. The Reaper Leviathan, for example, was honestly a bit disappointing to see once I got over the initial "Danger!!!" response. It doesn't look as big as it is. Maybe part of it is us subconsciously thinking "Ah, I can see the entire fish when up close, so it must only be the size of my head." But that's not necessarily true. There's a bit of depth-of-field missing which makes it difficult to determine accurate sizes because we're looking at a flat screen. 4:40 Snowstalkers are that big???? I thought they were like.. the size of a jaguar or lion, maybe bear or something, not the size of a direbear with a crocodile mouth!

I'm pretty sure the disproportion is due to FOV and perspective. That is, these creatures must be much larger than the player's model so that in the eyes of the player they look like the creators wanted. I don't remember which building it is, but it seems to me that the Greek parthenon has columns wider at the top than at the bottom. So that the person standing at the bottom think that the whole column is the same width.

@LouiseEirwen4 жыл бұрын
This was interesting but I think the size of the creatures were also done by the creatures on purpose to make forced perspective. Like with the fish that is supposed to be tinny but when you look at it is bigger than her head. That is for details and perspective. The devs know that the player is playing in first person so they work with the scaling of the creatures until it LOOKS abut where they want it to look size wise in first person. Sometimes that means making them enormous. In some cases they really are supposed to be that big, like the one in ice, it really is supposed to be so large you're glad its iced, it is essentially like the skeletal remains in the Lost River in the first Subnautica game.
@memejesus42944 жыл бұрын
I think the reason the player model seems so small is so it gives the impression of perspective while not take up much of your view. The actual scale of these things relative to Robin is what you see in game - it’s her “model” that isn’t to scale.
@Awesomecrunch4 жыл бұрын
Makes sense!
@thefartingtorpedo52074 жыл бұрын

The environment also seems small thanks to the players swim speed (somebody else's comment reminded me of the swim speed, I'll edit in their name when I finish this comment. EDIT: WildRosomak ). The player, aka Robin could cross many medium sized backyard pools in less than 5 seconds, and most people could probably swim around 1-2 meters a second if they are really pushing hard. Also, like I mentioned on the other person's comment, if you used a seaglide and drove it into a wall, many bones would probably break (pretty much your entire arm would break). Seriously, imagine ramming into a wall at 9 meters a second. For the Americans who for some reason still haven't learned what a meter is, that's about 9 yards and a few inches a second. I'm not sure about the damage the seaglide would sustain, since it's futuristic technology. And lastly, I hope below zero eventually supports vr because I really wanna be able to experience the true size for myself
@Myrical320074 жыл бұрын
That's the one thing I dislike about Subnautica is the sense of scale. The only thing you can infer about size is the speed of the character and creature in relation to surroundings. It works alright but I wish you could clearly see how monstrously huge some of these creatures really are in game. I have my fov higher to make things look as large as they are and it works better. I am in no manner a game designer but I'm sure some other people have thought the same.

Yeah, I've always noticed how she swims so fast, she would cross a decent sized pool in less than 5 seconds. And while I'm not an expert swimmer, I'm probably faster than a good portion of people (Well, a good portion of people can't swim but that's besides the point) and i, even with fins, probably am not even half her speed. Also, the seaglide is probably so fast that you can break you hand if you drive into a wall straight on.

Most First person games mount the camera on top of the players head or just under it, as opposed to eye level. That's why perspective gets all kinds of funny.

As if the game wasn't scary enough, now we know the creatures are the size of buildings

I think the weird size discrepancy may be deliberate or at least the devs took qdvantage of it since you can hold them but I always found the difference interesting

This was the biggest failure of the devs in both Subnautica and below zero. The creatures just do not look anywhere near as big as they actually are and its quite a detriment to the final impact they have on the game experience. It's not just a small difference- the size difference is DRAMATIC between how big creatures look in first person/ 3rd person. I don't even fully understand what causes this issue.
@Awesomecrunch4 жыл бұрын
The issue is completely down to the first person view and the low field of view. It's not the developer's fault, there's not a lot they could do about it without ruining the performance.

It's not a fault of the devs or a failure, it's literally how it's suppose to be, the only difference in this video in terms of size from 1st to 3rd person view is all based on the small fish, the medium sized to Leviathan class are all accurate to what we see in game, you are exaggerating acting like it's all bad. The smaller fish look bigger when free swimming to help with the player being able to visually see them, as they are super tiny, if they were as tiny as they are when you hold them how small do you think they would actually look ? It would be ridiculous to try and find them and catch them with your hands, like actual real life fish. That's the only difference. Also just FOV if you wanna improce the scale.

There should be a mod that changes the camera FOV.
@Fearless134684 жыл бұрын
I think part of the reason they are scaled so weird is because the game is meant to be played in 1st person and not have obvious size references. They are scaled so that they look normal in 1st person.

While playing below zero I once saw a chelicerate from an iceberg. I saw just its finns peaking out the top of the Water like a snake and I swear it looked way bigger than in the water

Same, i was palying yesterday and(from an iceberg) saw what is looked like a spine fins of a large shark. Even thought that was a new helicerate or something. It turns out there was a polar ray swimming the surface on its side.

i really wish Subnautica would just add a MASSIVE monster just somewhere random that would be the size of the fossil or something like that it would be so awesome
