The Process of Soil Stabilisation
During initial surveys for the construction of a new supermarket distribution centre in Newbridge, Ireland it was found that the ground was insufficient to bear the weight of the building or associated hard surfaces around the building.
There was a layer of peat under the surface that needed to be removed and the rest of the clay-like material wasn't suitable for building on either. The expensive option would have been to remove all the material off-site and then to bring in aggregate to take it's place. Option two involved removing the layer of peat and stabilising the rest the material with cement, which was strong enough to bear the buildings foundations
Newton Ground Engineering which is part of the CAB Group undertook the soil stabilisation contract. The stabilisation was done in sections and layers 380mm deep which compacted to 300mm.
Excavators load the pre-treated soil on to ADT's which transport it over to the working area. Bulldozers then level the soil to 380mm deep using Trimble GPS systems. Spreaders distribute a precise amount of cement on the layer of soil, with Wirtgen WR250 soil stabilisers following after to mix the soil and cement. Bulldozers then level the treated material allowing rollers to compact the layer to 300mm. In the end a sample is taken to be tested.

Awesome video! Looked like lime rather than cement? Great job and I wouldn't have minded if was 10- 20 mins long! Haven't done this since 2005 and it is impressive! We did an industrial park with warehouses 250,000 to 1,000,000 SF. All of the pads were done with lime. Semi trailer parking lots and docks were done, with both lime and cement. One we did in the middle of winter in Ohio and the lime made it lime dirt inthe summer! That site was so bad with fall rains and putting in storm and sanitary, that we were just about storm grade! Just like in this video we made controlled lifts of ... I think 28 inches. But we were spreading mud! The hydrated lime could suck up 10x it weight! Then we came back and did the top 2-3 feet with cement for sub base leaving it 2-4 low. The next spring we went in to finish grade the stone base and you could barely cut it with a graders or roller. We actually have the company come back and loosen the the top 4-6 inches. That made me a believer! The company was done the other pads and parking lots so no big deal. We also did some roads that were jointly maintained by county and state. There were a bunch of raod that went through a flood plain and the lower part of the county. The State got federal money. What was different about this application was we mixed RAP (Recycled Asphalt Pavement) in a 1:! ratio of clay and RAP. Then hit it with lime. We allowed the lime to do its thing. Then came back and hit it again with cement up to asphalt grade. We did 2 to 3 lifts in most places with the top lift... 28" ... or the maximum depth of the reclaimer in cement. (maybe ir was 21"? I know it was right at 2 foot lifts. Regardless, that was done in 2006 and those roads are still rock solide today! It really made me a believer! We did a lot of county and country roads in surrounding countings after that until 2008 when the economy and the construction idustry tanked! Now I do consulting, inspection and test for civil projects!

Jason Collins The location is Newbridge, Ireland. The material is so strong after stabilisation that the foundation piers of the warehouse can go directly on to it rather than having to pile through it. It’s far harder than any natural ground excluding something like granite rock.

Jason Collins It’s actually far from its final hardness after the rollers have been over it. It takes days or weeks to fully harden, and when it does it’s like digging rock. They have to do it in layers of 300mm until it’s at the desired level.

i'm quite sure this project has nothing to do with any of that. the ground was made up of stuff that wouldn't make a good foundation, this project seems to be using as much of what was already on site by digging it up and mixing it with other stuff to make a good foundation. all of this is guess work on my part mostly form reading the description.

Luther Blankenship They are deliberately not filling the trucks up. The area that they are taking it to is being stabilized and cannot be damaged or chewed up too much by the trucks.

Luther Blankenship You need to understand that the focus of this project is soil stabilisation. They have to treat a certain sized area in a day 1 foot deep. They can’t do any more or less. It makes no difference if they load those trucks as full as they can. The same amount of work gets done in a day. One layer has to harden before another one can go on.
