Interesting fact: Always Look on the Bright Side of Life is the most requested funeral song in the UK.
@lhpl4 жыл бұрын
That is indeed an interesting fact. As such, it deserved a fact check, and according to this: www.independent.co.uk/life-style/funeral-songs-popular-music-frank-sinatra-ed-sheeran-hymns-songs-coop-a8896156.html it is perhaps not _quite_ a fact. But it did hold the tenth place in 2019, having gone down two places on the list of popular funeral songs. I mentioned a debate between Cleese and Palin and two opponents in a comment a bit further up a minute ago, and one of the opponents in that debate was quite certain that the "tenth-rate" film would be soon forgotten and have no lasting impression - this fact (disregarding the inaccuracies) really proves how wrong he was. The song is one of many things that makes me view this film as far more than just a silly comedy - it is a great work of art, with a strong and good message to all that watch it.

As an European I enjoy when people react to European movies with unexpected nudity in it. To me it's normal but Americans especially always have some sort of awkward reaction to it. It's just fun to watch.

Especially male nudity seems to freak out Americans for some reason. Another big difference is that usually nudity in European productions are casual, as we saw here when Brian simply woke up and opened the window.
@Henrik_Holst4 жыл бұрын
@ebulating Yeah I've noticed that, over here in Europe it's quite common and as I wrote usually shown completely casual, and not for the shock and awe that it probably would have been in a US production. It's too bad that Verhoeven never got his idea past TriStar, he wanted to show the first erect penis in an American film when he did Total Recall and apparently Arnold was game (no surprise there).
@thatoneguyagain22524 жыл бұрын
A lot of that is due to Ronald Reagan. Because he didn't mind violence in movies but objected to sex, he used his influence in Hollywood to redirect the MPAA's ratings policy. Reagan was a former president of the Screen Actor's guild, and his old friend Jack Valente ran the MPAA, so Reagan's influence was tangible. Nowadays it's almost impossible to get even an R rating for a movie with nudity, but you can kill hundreds of people in a PG-13. Makes no sense to me, but I'm one of those "weirdos" who prefers sex to violence. Never owned a gun, but I proudly own a penis. Take it with me everywhere (it's a Concealed Carry).

I've just realised that I have a new personal definition of bravery: uploading a Life of Brian reaction to KZbin with the nekkid bits uncensored. 😂 This movie is so stupid and incredibly intelligent as well. Scenes like Brian shouting out the window that the followers are all individuals and all have to think for themselves (and they mindlessly repeat it back to him), and where Brian says things and his followers twist it round to mean whatever they already wanted to believe in anyway, are some of the best ever parodies of organised religion (and, in fairness, human nature in general).
@lhpl4 жыл бұрын
Which is really sad when you think about it. As an atheist, naturist, socialist, humanist Dane, seeing Americans react to nudity always makes me a bit depressed. Nearly every fucking (or non-fucking, for that matter) person either has a penis or a vagina, and two nipples on some size of breasts. There can be no surprise (the absence of these items on a naked person would be far more surprising!) - so why are you always shocked to see something you obviously now is there and you already have a general idea of how looks? Nudity is not equal to sex. (Speaking of sex, sex is also perfectly natural. And for sure, nudity can be a great part of the fun in sex, still doesn't make them equal.) When I watched this reaction and was "greeted" by a warning I thought WTF? then it dawned on me. Prudetube! Thank you Ashleigh for being probably much less prudish than many by including the clips, although I wish it wasn't necessary to mention this.

@doperagu84714 жыл бұрын
@@lhpl I completely agree! I'm half swedish (other half american) and I definitely remember growing up (spending months each year in sweden) that nudity was very much not a big deal. Basically kids can go without a bathing suit until 7-8ish and grown adults go naked together in saunas or hot tubs and no one bats an eye! And no one is ogeling at your body parts whatsoever. It's just another body. I think that it's precisely BECAUSE our media (the US) has censored nudity so heavily for decades - since almost the beginning of American cinema, and thus mainstream American media as a whole - it's become something "forbidden" or for "adult eyes only." And because of this, nudity is seen as private, and something to only share between lovers, so the media mainly portrays nudity in a sexual way - which influences what's mainstream culture and then parents. And then children of those parents grow up never really seeing naked bodies unless it's pertaining to something sexual. And at the same time kids can see as many zombie heads cut off and people being shot on television or in movies as they want. But a *female* nipple or a penis 😱 The ideology is sooooo backwards 🤦🏼♀️
@BiblicallyAccurateToaster4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is odd. Nudity is our natural state but in the US & many other countries it's heavily censored & when shown, like said above, it's nearly always highly sexualized. Imo it goes back to the long time influence of quite a few religions & of course one of the earliest Abrahamic stories. Adam & Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge & realized they were naked & became ashamed; covering themselves w/ fig leaves they sowed together. Personally I wouldn't want to see gratuitous amounts of nudity in cinema but if done tastefully & artistically there shouldn't be an issue imo. It's been a faux pas so deeply engrained within our culture that imo it'll take many many decades to change that perspective.

FYI: Beatle George Harrison (who was pals with Eric Idle of Monty Python) financially bankrolled this film when it seemed they'd lose funding for it. Harrison claimed he did it 'cause he wanted to see the movie. Idle called it the most expensive movie ticket price ever. I believe Harrison played an extra in the stoning scene.

Look up: *Graham Chapman's Eulogy by John Cleese * That last "I'm Brian" scene is a parody on the scene from "Spartacus (1960)" by Kubrick. The Romans want to crucify Spartacus for leading the slave rebellion against Rome. Spartacus, not wishing to inflict more pain and suffering on his fellow rebel slaves, open his mouth to say "I'm-" but then the man next to him shouts "I'm Spartacus!" then another, and more others exclaim the same sentence untill all of the captured rebel slaves start chanting they're Spartacus. So the Romans crucify them all. Which they would have done anyway historically but that's Hollywood for ya.

Fun facts: In the "Biggus Dickus" scene, the extras playing the guards were told they would not get paid if they laughed, so that suppressed laughter was real. Also no one wanted to touch this movie, so it was funded by George Harrison simply because he really wanted to see it, making that the world's most expensive movie ticket

Something sounds "urban legendish" about that theory. I mean, it seems Palin got all his dialogue timed too well and all the extras managed to hit their action marks too perfectly for that to be true.

@@rsrt6910 not really. Cleese has talked about it a few times. They didn't tell the guards what was going to be said. Palin and the Python boys knew, but the guards didn't. Palin only ad libbed a part of it in response to what the guards did or didn't do.

Not that I support toxic fandom, but I do think Monty Python & The Holy Grail is so obviously satirical and surreal that the ending would make sense. When I first saw the film, I had never heard of Monty Python either. I mean... they're riding fake horses while someone clacks coconut shells together. It would be even more strange if it had a proper resolution to the story. The story was never the point. Again: I do not in any way support toxic fandom and insulting people for not understanding.

@hedgehog1965uk4 жыл бұрын
One of the characteristics of Python is to subvert expectations. If they just found the grail at the end, that wouldn't be very Python. Also, did you know that the whole knocking coconuts together was originally done cos they didn't have the budget for real horses, and the joke was formed out of that.

The movie does have closure, according to its own logic. Beneath the comedy, Brian is a tragic figure, so his end has to be tragedy. Everything is caused by people projecting their (unfair) expectations onto Brian, right from the moment of his birth. He is expected to die, so there is only one possible end. The same was true for Christ: he was pushed onto an inevitable path (who pushed him depends on whether you're a believer or not) and there was only one possible end to that path. I find Life of Brian a very clever and thought-provoking film, more so than Holy Grail (which is just a set of sketches and quotable moments without a story, which is why it doesn't have any closure).
@AtlantaTerry4 жыл бұрын

@davidmeadows33514 жыл бұрын
@@AtlantaTerry I didn't know that... interesting, thanks.
@notvalidcharacters2 жыл бұрын
I can't agree that Grail "doesn't have closure". It doesn't have the *traditional* closure; rather it's the ultimate self-aware Fourth Wall break -- you find out the entire thing all along was a scene, and not the story you assumed. Much like they did in the TV series, where Graham Chapman walks out of a building, looks at the camera and says, "Good Lord -- I'm on film!" ... then the scene pans back to show the camera crew, at which point somebody says ... "If this is the camera crew then... who's filming us now?".
@shawnj19664 жыл бұрын

Knowing Monty Python, I'd bet it wasn't completey random. Brian, while NOT being Jesus (who does appear in the movie in the background) does have several similarities with the carpenter in question.
