"He's like the male version of Veruca Salt" is probably the most accurate description of Dudley I've ever heard. You hit the nail on the head with that one! (I did chuckle a little at your comment about the troll not looking "like the little toys from the 80s." Oh my sweet summer child, troll dolls were created in Denmark in 1959, and were an international sensation by 1963. Demand for the dolls has waxed & waned over the years; the 1980s version is just one of several cresting waves in their popularity.) EDIT TO ADD "Who's keeping track of these points?" It's not shown in the movies, however in the books there are giant magical hourglasses which show the points for each house.

The book's original title had "Philosopher's" instead of "Sorcerer's" in it. The reason they changed it to the latter for American readers and audiences was because they had thought kids there wouldn't know who a philosopher was, but they knew who a sorcerer was. One thing that i ABSOLUTLY HATE about the movies, it's the fact that they ALWAYS choose to portray Ron like an idiot, and the fact that the writers, ALWAYS gave those who were supposed to be Ron's "lines", or things that Ron did in the books to Hermione instead !! .

Hated that too! They really did Ron dirty with that. He was BFF#1, and they turned him into a low level dumb as sidekick. Like the only reason for him in the movie is to be a conduit for Harry to hang out with the other more interesting Weasely family members.

So glad you liked it, Ashleigh. I worked at Universal Hollywood when it opened there and pretty much every day after my shift I would head over to Hogemead and The Boar's Head Inn for Butter Beer and dinner if I was hungry. I loved that place. Some background notes: The reason Harry lives with the Dursleys during school breaks is that Mrs. Dursley is Harry's mother's sister. And she hated his mom because she was jealous she didn't get a letter to Hogwarts. Lord Voldemort couldn't zap Harry a second time because the killing curse he tried to use on harry rebounded on him and nearly killed him. Professor Quirrell ran into what was left of Lord Voldemort in the dark woods and lived off Quirel as a host body while he was recovering. John Cleese was the first ghost head you saw pop up through the table. Nearly Headless Nick he is a Gryffindor ghost who attended Hogwarts in 1492. So much more fun and scares to come.

I started reading the books when I heard the first movie was going to come out. I was in my late 20s, but found the books to be very well-written and actually a little scary at times. Only the first 4 books were out at this time (book 5 didn't come out until 2003 & the 1st movie was released in 2001), but I blew through them like nobody's business (I love to read). The movies are pretty true to the books, but some of the later movies, there's some key elements from the books that are for some reason missing from the movies. Like characters show up with no explanation who they are and why they're there, though the book does explain the who and why, which annoyed me a bit.

I was an adult already when this came out. I freely admit to crying in the theater when they were showing what kind of family Harry had, because of personal experiences. I've since spoken with multiple people who had the same experience and was told by a psychologist that that kind of upbringing is a common cause for PTSD and seeing the film is a trigger for some people. I hope that this movie has helped at least some people to make a decision to be better parents or, even more important, step-parents.

1. These movies getting progressively darker as they go is one of the best elements in my opinion. The fact that you are in the dame position as the main trio, seeing the veil of childlike innocence and wonder lifted to reveal the dark underbelly of the wizarding world is a great touch 2. The CGI in the early movies was REALLY good for its time, mind you the first 3 came out from 2001. - 2004. so the fact that it holds up so well is crazy 3. Alan Rickman was a legend. He , unfortunately, passed away in 2016. But he left quite the legacy, not just with Snape but with almost every character he played. My elementary school reserved the local movie theater for an early morning showing of Sorcerer's Stone on the first weekend it was released. We had the whole building to ourselves because it was before the theater opened for the day. It was free and our school filled three auditoriums. The principal and assistant principal worked the concession stand and handed out free popcorn. I started reading the series from book 1 the next day until I was caught up. After that, I bought every book and saw every movie at midnight. My love for this franchise probably would've never happened if my school didn't hold that special showing.

Wow! What a great school memory to have! I was already grown up by the time Harry Potter came out as a film but I know I would have LOVED if I had been able to take part something like that in my school days.

I got into the books right around when this movie came out as well. My dad sent me all the books released up until that point for my birthday which was books 1-4. Loved them and have read all 7 numerous times. Nowadays I am a little less of a fan having noticed more of their faults and because of Rowling herself. But damn do I still love these books. Every kid has that one books series that they grew up with.

The Ron face is because he’s a brand new actor. He gets waaay better as the movies goes on

Right. While some like Harry (Dan Radcliffe), and Draco (Tom Felton), were child actors with a few credits under their belt, (Dan was in David Copperfield with Maggie Smith/Mcgonagall, who recommended him for Potter) open casting calls allowed anyone a chance. Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) had never acted outside school plays before. Easy on the child actors. It was magic school for us, it was acting school for them.

I literally grew up with the books, so this franchise has a special place for me. The movies did a very good job adapting the books, considering how much stuff they have on them.

Since I'm not seeing anyone else mention it (I may have missed it and this will end up in the middle of everyone else who's mentioned it), the Hogwarts Houses rely on certain traits for people to get in. Gryffindor - brave, adventurous Ravenclaw - witty, intelligence Hufflepuff - kind, helpful Slytherin - ambitious, cunning (not necessarily evil, but easy to follow)

Those are not the traits of hufflepuff, they are loyalty and hardworking.

I always thought it was: Gryffindor = jocks Ravenclaw = nerds Slytherin= preps Hufflepuff = stoners and everyone else...

For peak hot Rickman, I recommend Sense and Sensibility directed by Ang Lee. That movie is hella good and made me understand the attraction of Jane Austen's stories. This movie is probably the weakest of the series, all the kids and directors get better as you go for the most part.

We need more reactions to Sense and Sensibility. A great movie that I think Ashleigh would end up loving (after some initial resistance).

Continue! I hope you speed through these because they're great to binge. Also, you should watch deleted scenes for each movie. And I just have to say, I love your laugh.

Chris Columbus (who directed _Home Alone_ ) directed this movie and the sequel. John Williams also composed the music.
