this is very good tutorial, i was struggling to understand the difference between global accelerator and ELB. Now I understood, global accelertor is for load balancing the traffic between two different regions and ALB is with in the region

Nice tutorial and clear explanation. Thanks. Small doubt.. we did not specify the target port for the EC2 instances we have selected in the endpoint group. How does Global Accelerator knows which port should it forward the traffic to on EC2 instances? As I understand, global accelerator gets traffic on port 80, but how does it know what is the destination port on EC2s.

Completed CCP last week, Sounds like the preparation is more or less same as CCP + 30% extra knowledge

Congratulations on passing your exam! Yes, that is right. You will need additional knowledge after you finish the foundational CCP course to be able to pass the SAA-C02 exam as well. Keep the momentum going.

Why would I use global accelerator instead of route 53 failover routing or cloudfront ? Is it only when I need 2 static IP addresses. Also if we use this, we couldn't use Geolocation routing. You did say about traffic dial, does that work based on where the user is ?

route53 uses multiple hops to route using public internet whereas Accelerator will use edge location and traffic flow through AWS internal network so low latency as compared to route53. Cloudfront will have static content use case and accelerator can be useful in dynmic it seems.

In this use case it seems like the global accelerator is acting like a load balancer (switching b/w IPs based on health checks). What are other examples of use cases for global accelerator that are more unique and can't be resolved using other AWS resources?

It's more like an intelligent DNS such as Route 53 latency based routing + health checks. It's the only service that directs traffic across the edge locations / aws global network to endpoints on such as broad range of TCP/UDP ports. CloudFront does this with custom origins but only for HTTP.
