AWS: How to Place Your Lambda Functions in a VPC

Before you can use Lambda to it's fullest potential, you must know how to run them in a VPC.
CORRECTION: It is not required that your Lambda functions run in two subnets, but it's definitely a good idea!

This seems wrong. As far as I can tell Lambdas don't run inside a VPC, when you setup a Lambda's VPC config you are setting up a network connection between your VPC and the Lambda service VPC which is separate.

Thanks for putting this out there. Just wanted to point out a common misconception, your lambda is never running "inside" your private VPC. Unlike EC2, when you select a VPC on your lambda configuration, you are actually not setting where your lambda will run at all, instead, you are enabling that lambda to be able to access a VPC. The message in the console "Select a VPC that your function will access" subtly makes this distinction. It may not matter for the majority of use-cases, but hopefully will improve your mental model of how lambda works a bit. For further consideration: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJa5YnSPrs2aj6M

Amazon would take 5 IPs from our CIDR block.... first 4 IP addresses & last IP address... That's why the actual IPs in /24 is 251 (256 - 5)

But why does this lambda function work even without VPC? I tested the exact same code before connecting to a VPC and it still worked

Because the lambda gets a "hidden" VPC with the correct configuration. When you provide your own, you essentially take full responsibility for the networking.
