Dr. Pillemer I just saw this video and I would have to say that what you are doing to understand deltoid paralysis and nerve damage is very admirable. What brings me to this video in the first place is that my deltoid is completely wasted, but just like the man in the army I am able to 65+ push ups and have a FULL range of motion. I would love to talk more on the subject if you do in fact respond. And I have sent you a LinkedIn invitation. Thank you. Austin

Hi Austin. I am glad that you found this video useful and that you are one of the few that have regained full function despite complete wasting of your deltoid. I will check out your LinkedIn invitation.Cheers,Roger

I got this out of nowhere , shoulder pain , and when I did some stretches I think I damaged the nerve and can’t move my arm away from my body

I recently had a dislocation. I have 0 movment of the deltoid and numbness. Is it common for completely paralysis? Can it come back with time? I am currently completely paralysed no lifting of my arm at all. It’s very scary

The auxiliary nerve can repair itself albit very slow . Im suffering from locked posterior shoulder dislocation with reverse hill sachs lesion and bankart labrum lesion 30% and and only abduct my arm to 50% at present with is just over 2 years from the motorcycle accident. Needed surgery but rejected it as id been through enough pain in 24 hrs . Theres no way in hell could i do a push up the pain in armpit elbow down both side of forearm into hand

Hello Doctor. I dislocated my shoulder 4 weeks ago. Still I feel a skin numbness of the shoulder area (over the deltoid) mostly after abducting a few times. Abduction is still a bit painful but not an excessive pain. I want to if this a serious condition and will this lead to atrophy ?

Doctor, I did a EMG and I found out that I have a mild chronical axonal involvement of the axillary nerve. My left deltoid is about 50% atrophied and a have normal movements. The electroneuromyography shows that I have increased amplitude and duration in the left axillary nerve. With this diagnostics Do you think is possible regain muscles on the left deltoid? Thank your for your help.

Hi William.I am not able to give you a firm answer to your question, as there are so many variables involved. For example, what is the cause of your axillary nerve lesion, was there an injury, how long has it been present etc.The best advice I could give you is to see a specialist, either a neurologist or an orthopaedic surgeon, and get their opinion.Cheers,Roger

Roger Pillemer Thank you for your answer. Doctor's in Brazil are not concerned about atrophy, they are conrcerned if I'm able to move my shoulder. My shoulder began to atrophy suddenly, with no explanation. I did feel pain in my shoulder 4 years ago, for about 1 month, and when I saw, my left deltoid was atrophied. Seriously, no one knows how to explain what happened, but I saw some cases on the internet about volleyball players with the same problem (silence atrophy, despite in my case sudden and acute pain). Since this occurred, I have no pain anymore, but my deltoid is still atrophied. Thank your for the advice, but I with you could say more about it.

Unfortunately there are lots of clinicians who see and use abduction as undeniable proof the deltoid is functioning normally, regardless of the complete atrophy staring them in the eye. I'm really not sure why you say full extension of the bicep leads to its maximum 'efficiency'. Intuitively I would say full extension is the least efficient joint angle, and you can test this with a weight. It's hard to contract the muscle around full extension than it is at half extension.
@rogerpillemer1666
@rogerpillemer1666 6 жыл бұрын
With the arm in full extension, the biceps is a maximum length, and therefore maximal efficiency. As soon as the elbow is flexed, the muscle shortens and is less efficient. With the elbow flexed and in supination, the biceps is also less efficient than in pronation, as in pronation the biceps is slightly lengthened as the tuberosity of the radius moves posteriorly, lengthening the muscle slightly.

Hello Dr Pillemer. My deltoid atrophied after an arthroscopic surgery. EMG results show that I have partial axonal neuropathy. My orthopedist recommended another surgical procedure, but I don't know what to do because I don't have much confidence in the physician. What is the usual treatment in this case?
@rogerpillemer1666
@rogerpillemer1666 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony. A lot would depend on how long ago the arthroscopic surgery was carried out. The fact that an EMG showed a partial lesion might suggest that improvement could occur with time. The consensus is that nerve injuries can improve for up to 18 months to 2 years. A repeat EMG after a period of say 3 months, and compared to your first EMG could give an indication of whether or not improvement is occurring. With regard to 'another surgical procedure' as has been suggested, as noted in my presentation on complete axillary nerve lesions with deltoid paralysis, not uncommonly people with complete axillary nerve lesions often do very well despite the deltoid atrophy. Certainly then, and noting your apprehension, a second opinion would be in order before considering anything further surgically.

Hi AhmedI think the best thing to do is see an orthopaedic surgeon for an opinion. It seems most unlikely that just sitting in an odd posture would cause axillary nerve damage and deltoid atrophy.

Dear Doc, I have 2 issues and both I believe caused by prolonged sitting on very odd posture head bent forward and back bent backward. so I got some numbness and paraesthesia in both arms and hands including carpal tunnel synd and arms paraesthesia and left deltoid atrophy and both legs paresthesia that responded to exercises and anyiinflamatory drugs , initially my symptoms responded to NSAIDs and than I developed penile numbness once while sitting at the corner of wooden bed for more than 10 hours so I stoup immediately that initially responded immediately upon standing up immediately and sensitivity returned back but than gone again till now. now cock is numb along with scrotum, I was sitting on pc for more than 10 hours continuously . some exercises worked well but still I have penile numbness and deltoid muscular weakness I need your advise how to tackle this issue with the exercise. my MRIs showing disc bulges and muscular spasm on cervical and lumbosacrum level. kindly help I know this is my vertibral column issue due to prolonged sitting in odd position for years., regards

Doctor my deltoid muscles are wasted. Is this treatable. Forward abduction restricted. No nerve trauma. Doctor says it's infection in axillary nerve. It will cure in 7 months. What is your opinion. Please tell me soon. I want to know if it is curable.
