Why did the US not land their fighters in Hawaii for the last round? Would likely have been able to defend the crucial VC in return for losing the useless fleet.

Love these videos overall - and I hope in later tournaments, there is an opportunity for longer videos with more of the strategy. I understand keeping it short, and the live Q&A later to discuss more - but there might be an appetite for longer videos with the audience.

Wait, scrolling through your channel this seems to be the first play-by-play series? It's incredibly well made! I was invested for both games and even seem to have understood most of what happened even though i never played axis and allies. I hope something like this can become a regular format but if I had to guess it was a lot of work. Still, it's crazy that we can just watch incredibly deep discussions of a board game with such a high production value on yt. Some things about living in this time and reality are really not so bad after all :D

In a weird way, that initial hammering in Russia helped you I think. It made the Allies shift to try for a Germany first plan, but then they split their focus with Britain and the US which was not a good move. What you said in the round 1 video about focussing on one direction really hit home here. The Allies just kept splitting their focus, causing failure of action.

That missing fighter is very frustrating. This is why judges (and discretion) is important, instead of dumb letter of the law. It's like starting a chess game, and after 2 moves you realize you're missing a rook. Obviously you place the piece, and anyone with a modicum of sportsmanship would allow it to be placed. You had far more grace than I would have had.
@hoosierflatty64358 ай бұрын
Ya those other dudes just should've let it on there. Maybe the rule should be that all players have to check and sign off on the pieces prior to bidding.
@BoardGameNation8 ай бұрын
Yup, I hope that rule gets revisited for future events. Thanks for watching!
@winoodlesnoodles19848 ай бұрын
While I understand the frustration, don't forget that the players who were playing the Axis, checked the troops of the Axis. As such, they had a chance to catch and fix the mistake. It this particular case, I'm 100% on board with letter of the law. If it had been a case is which the Allied players checked the Axis troops, then I would agree that putting the plane on the board was the correct move.

Great video. What I learned 1. Check everything in preparation. Then recheck and crosscheck. Sometimes you do need accountants. No point in having a great bid only to lose it all by not checking initial placement. 2. Be prepared to switch strategy. If crushing India isn't working because India is overdefended then the Calcutta crush IS working but move to their other weak spot now they have shored up this weak spot. Was it 'division of forces' Napoleon called it. 3. Reduce redundancy of units. Buy it to use it. Everything an aircraft kills points or a tank picks,up free cash it is paying for itself. If it sits somewhere doing nothing it isn't earning any interest on the investment

I’ve just started watching these videos and they bring me back to my childhood playing this game. I am a little dusty on the rules, but I have a question. For the British final turn, wouldn’t it have made more sense to throw all of their air power against the German troops in France? Couldn’t they have significantly softened France for an American landing? Sure they would’ve lost all their planes, but they weren’t getting another turn anyways.

Great video! I love the commentary, looking at each countries turn as it comes up. I don't want to get too down on the Allied players. It looks like they are playing a more long term strategy, something for a 10-12 hour game instead of 5 hours. Yes, that is a mistake, but it is likely what they are more familiar with. The MMA has a great saying for this. "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face." The full impact of this means, that people go in with a plan, but if things don't follow the plan, they typically fall back on what they know best and are most familiar with. The military version of this is, "No plan survives contact with the enemy."

After the quality of the Russian opening round, I feel the Allies missed a golden opportunity to capitalize and go all-in on crushing Germany. U.S. waited too long to mobilize and should have gone heavy into Germany instead of Africa when they did. The U.K. player didn't seem to have an overall strategy other than turtling in India, and honestly, the Allies' last round makes no sense. It's as though they didn't know what the victory conditions were at the end of the last round of play

Personally, if you are the one setting up the game and you forgot to put everything out that’s on you. If the organizers are setting up the games then I would say add the plane as long as the game hadn’t started. It is only a game but some grownups act like children and that turns me off from events like this. When I was in the army a bunch of us would play everything from risk to the many Avalon Hills games that were available in the mid 80’s. We were ruthless little napoleons and had fun with no body throwing the dice across the room if you lost. It was relaxing and helped us get to know each other better. I haven’t played this game in a number of years but will definitely have to dig it out for my grandsons to enjoy.

When I first played A&A decades ago, I loved it (partly due to being interested in WWII). The game was a pain to set up, so there were not many chances to play against people willing to take the time with it. Anyway, I began to play both sides to see what the best moves may be, and react to the moves with the next "player." I never thought you could calculate winning percentages on a battle. When the game first came out, they did not have artillery, destroyers, or cruisers. Battleships were the kings at 4,4 then. I believe there was only one winning condition for the allies then, to take Berlin and Tokyo, and hold both until the end of the turn. I am certain the rules have changed a bit also. Just watching you guys plan out your victory and remain in positions where you could counterattack was impressive. My heart sank for you when I saw the end of Russia's first incredible move. Given a start like that, the allies should have kept full pressure on Germany and keep you guys from dictating the game. The UK did not do enough on the western front to help pinch the situation and set the table for America. Dont know what was going on with America. They seemed satisfied with watching the game instead of playing it. They did nothing until they realized Hawaii was in danger. Kudos to both of you for advancing to the semi finals.

I like the idea of 5 rounds in a championship setting. Grab those victory cities. If no one can successfully hold them, then it's a tie and another sudden death round is there for the next to hold that victory city or cities at the end of the round. The IPC rule after 5 rounds works just as well for a 5 round tournament game. I think both criteria are valid. Strategy in both ways. I agree that using bombers with fighter escorts can Seriously damage the IPC's of nations especially towards the end of round 5. Insult to injuries. Great Channel!

I remember playing this game over a decade ago and really digging deep into strategy discussions on every angle. My group of table top gamers really liked the occasional strategy board game to break from D&D now and then. I recall we figured out if all players involved are knowledgeable of the game’s basic flow of rules, the Allie’s side wins 95% of the time. For the axis to win, Japan has to take over China with almost no hiccups in the first round. Germany has to have a golden first round east bound into Russia. If axis has a horrid first round of bad dice rolling, the allies have probably already won because once the US has both oceans loaded with resources it’s pretty much over by then.

That is interesting. Most tournament players would tell you the Axis is favored in OOB 1942.2 setup. Thus, the 3.0 setup, which gives more material to the Allies and removes or relocates key German units. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!

Seems weird to me that after the players set up the board the judges wouldn't inspect it to make sure nobody was cheating (or missing pieces).
@BoardGameNation8 ай бұрын
Maybe as the event gets bigger, that could be a possibility. Thanks for watching!

The Missing Fighter - it seems like the unfortunate lesson learned, is you need to check both sides. Or, check the game board after bidding - when you know which side you are going to be on. It feels too easy to remove pieces, or shift pieces around before the game starts.
@BoardGameNation8 ай бұрын
True and I would love that, but it is a timed game. Perhaps there needs to be time allotted for a complete double check of the board by all players. 10 minutes maybe. Thanks for watching!
@obluraschibus8 ай бұрын
honestly at that point I would've just placed the fighter there. What are they gonna say? "you added the fighter there?" "no it was there since the beginning, YOU CHECKED YOURSELF and said everything was in place".

@@obluraschibusanyone who would use a setup error when the board was checked loses my respect as a tournament player.

i'm glad that you were able to win, even with an additional -10 handicap. there is an example from a recent top-tier chess tournament, where magnus's opponent was 3 min late in a short time control game. of course the clock starts running. that's completely fair. what does magnus do? he sits on his first move for 3 min. that's sportsmanship. it's clear that the allied players here did not "have their eye on the ball". there is a VICTORY condition, and a short time control. the americans MUST be able to prepare a turn 5 punch. they didn't. all of your analysis is spot on.

Didn't even need that fighter!! You guys are so decisive in your moves and decisions and like you talked about- that won you the game. The Allies had no real direction and every round they were focused on a different area of the map without actually completing any objectives. You guys did an amazing job in stretching out their resources and not allowing any true allied success- all with a serious ICP disadvantage and an unlucky first round.

Excellent video-better than round one with all the early adversity you faced. Those round 1 dice and then the missing fighter BS would have set my blood pressure to "aneurism." Your cool heads and focus on the big picture are why you won. Congrats. Very well played. Looking forward to round 3!

Will you be making more opening strategy videos? I'd probably make a UK video next (skipping Germany at first) and have it branch like chess openings. Depending on Russia's opening and how it went (and Germany's probable reaction to it), perhaps discuss two main lines and a couple of general ideas. Next make a Germany video which basically becomes defensive/conservative Germany and aggressive Germany. You can then discuss both it's first turn (reaction to Russia) but especially Germany's second turn and overal idea keeping both main scenarios in mind. The following video's for Japan and USA can follow this common structure. Mostly reactive to the previous turns but with a general idea in mind. It would be nice for these videos to find one or more top online players, and maybe find good openings and much seen ideas for either beginners and experts.

I loved this one, even though the Allies blundered on occasion. But that's also very instructive! You mentioned the importance of having a win strategy. As allies either Germany first or Japan first. With the success of Russia's first turn a Germany first would be the obvious one imo. But even a Japan first could have worked if (especially the USA) committed to it. The second blunder or set of them even I as a noob saw, buying units that don't do anything. Especially all those land units without transports and ships not committed to anything. I learned a nice idea from you guys with this video, the grey skies. What happens on the east front is the trading back and forth of a handful of units. On paper a tank is much better than a fighter. But the tank needs to go with the occupying force and is killed without much risk next turn. You showed a fighter or bomber can lend its power to a battle and go back to safety. The infantry is there to take hits and be the cheapest troop to give away. You also bought a bunch of artillery during the game, new players might be drawn to tanks. But if you don't need the range they are superior to tanks per IPC as they make infantry project power and cost fewer points per casualty. I think that might be great stuff for a video, what to buy when.

Another great presentation! About the game itself, it did seem like the allied player wasted a ton of time and money doing nothing. I would never put land units into England until I had transports protected by aircraft carriers to move them into Europe. Same with America, he had more guys than his transports could move becaue he never made transports. And his bomber never bombed. Did he forget to strategic bomb every turn? I think if you had hot dice and your starting Japanese fighter you'd have cleaned this player off the board. About your moves, the guy into Iceland is a cute move. Have you ever thought about putting a guy into Gibraltar for the same reason, block American air support?
@BoardGameNation8 ай бұрын
I have! It isn't necessary as long as Gibraltar is under threat by Germany. They can land there, but they won't last long. Thanks for watching!
