First time I saw this I was amazed but thought that they'd looked hard to find songs for this number. Not quite - the sixth chord in a major progression (or relative minor) can be used as a major chord in the case of subdominants. It would be referred to as V of ii and musicians often use this to achieve tonicization or even to modulate to a new key. I am aware that they do not use this method in the arrangement above, but musicians are defensive of the small details - so perhaps he wasn't trying to undermine pornovlaxo, just point the more correct way of writing the progression. Benny is pretty much one of those people who can play anything. He does a lot of stuff on his own channel, including mash-ups of other songs using his keyboard and mic...in conjunction with a pedal effect setup with the capacity to record and playback, etc., so he can stack sounds at will. It's quite amazing. He can be a one person band if he wants to. He also takes melodica requests from people, and just churns out tunes by ear. For whatever reason the comedic genre is one that "The Axis of Awesome" is particularly suited for as a group. Alone, Benny is just an awkward geek with a butt-load of talent...but with Jordan acting as the "big personality", and Lee acting as Jordan's "hapless sidekick" they've created great stage personalities for a comedy circuit. In their few music videos they also use personas to satirize various song genres. In a way they ARE a real band. I mean, are Tenacious D a real band? What's the real difference between what they do and what Tenacious D does?

What do you mean?, The chords they play in this arrangement are E Maj, B Maj, C# min and A Maj. All of the songs in this medley are in a multitude of different keys. For instance, I found a version of "Wherever you will go" in D Major, as well as "Can you feel the love tonight" in Bb. Axis of Awesome just transposed them all into the same key for the purposes of the joke, which is that despite the different keys, all pop songs tend to use the same chord progression, I V vi IV.

No, it's I V vi IV. The I chord is the root chord, the roman numerals represent the other chord's values in relation to the root. ***NOTE*** Just because you use this chord progression does not mean you'll have a hit. There are a ton of chord progressions, and several are used more than this one (the I IV V progression is probably used in 98% of blues songs, and thousands and thousands of pop, rock, country, and folk songs. There is no real formula to writing a hit. ;)

In terms of intervals a I V VI IV in C would have the same interval progression as a I V VI IV in Bb. the progression would sound the same, but not the notes. There the same chords, in terms of intervals, but not the same notes.

@aquahockeydude Its a I - V- vi - IV in E so its E - B - c# minor - A. The left hand plays the root for all the chords, but the right hand uses different inversions. The E is played in root position, the B is in 1st inversion, c# is also 1st inversion, and the A is in 2nd inversion. Hope this helps :)

Uhh, no. If you play those chords with a capo on the fourth fret you get B F# C#m E which is still completely wrong. Having the ii instead of the vi doesn't magically fix itself if you transpose, you are just wrong in a different key.

The chords don't change, but the singing does change (starting each phrase on the minor chord, musical brilliance) that's why he would get confused. And if you play these chords at the 4th fret, via capo, you would get the right chords. He's not miles away.

I agree to a degree. However, they are not playing the entire song, verse or chorus. They are selecting certain parts that are the same. There may be 9 chords in the song but they are only focusing on four chords and ignoring the rest.

Fun Fact: Roman numerals let us notate these in ANY KEY without change, i.e. this would be I V vi IV, that's a major 1 chord, a major 5 chord, a minor 6 chord, and a major 4 chord. Tonic, dominant, sub-mediant, and sub-dominant. Yay music.
