Make sure when you do this you make sure the torque converter is seated correctly before bolting flywheel, or you’ll have trans fluid leaking bad. I had to get thicker spacers for the bolts because tightening it would pull the convertor back

been having same problem with 93 v6 in a gmc pickup didnt see this video when i replaced my flex plate i have tried the support on the back and straps and tring to use the other bolt pattern all lead to acually breaking the houseing on brand new starters ,stripping the other holes using helicoils which usually pull out after the second start now its either this or welding and drilling a starter pattern,which never goes right can i get just the nose of the starter im already into about 7 starters but not that bolt pattern??????

I install same plate on my 89chevy 350 n the bendex gear doesn't want to engafge bedex doesn't clear to mesh doesn't t clear just needs a smidgen of clearenc away would a shim work to make this clearance good wat I did Wadsworth stater front housing from a 3 bolt starter to my sarter set up for my truck just switched so I can mount on the kit plate but don't Engadget as exsplain rd below got anything I can go with to align this thing rite??

I dont see any way to shim it with this set up. I'm wondering if it a flexplate size issue. IIRC it only works with a 168t flexplate.

I ordered the same starter that you had on your page I'm trying it for a Chevy Silverado truck 1500 a 97 model the gear hits the flywheel the Chiefs will not line up on maybe Bendix gear needs to be a smaller

I welded mine with a stainless steel piece of althread on the outside tab. Half the inseet threads were sheared right off the block casting ... tried several ways,still got that slight torque & sideways cock. Lol welded it with wire welder 35 mm wire didn't even use my Argon... Respectively enough it holds still to this day .

Hey so I didn’t completely understand the kit as first so I took off the flex plate and put the bracket onto the block and went to reinstall stall the flex plate and it seemed the flex plate was going to rub on the starter bracket

Yes sir I had the same problem on my 96 Chevy k1500 where the outer ear broke off and bought the kit to fix it, starter, dowel pins, and bolts but when I bought the starter it says it may need to be shimmed is it possible to be shimmed or it should be fine without shims?

I just put in same kit but for got to put in the provided spa er behind flywheel im sure it was needed becus it did not turn over so back to work but it should be ok once I put in the spacer I put it in a 89 chevy pickup the plate is needed rite ?or spaceres shims?

Call them, I don't think you need the spacer. I did not use it for my 1985 350/th400 combo.

It never had one, but it should fit as the holes in the cover are oval, IIRC

Can you please help me out here in at a lost. I installed the plate and everything the way you said but it seems I have a bigger amount of space between the flywheel and convertor. And when I put the bolts in it will unseat them convertor and just gush fluid out. I even dropped the whole trans(was changing all the seals and gaskets) and I made sure to drag it correctly then when I bolted it back up same thing.

I'm not sure why the space would be so big as to unseat the converter from the front seal. It's only about 1/8th inch. I would call the manufacturer tech support.

Great fix. I didn’t know a product like that existed. It looks like a good option if you don’t have access to a welder. It looks like a boat load of work but it did work. You need to hit that greasy pig with some gunk foamy and a pressure washer. It looks like the Valdez in that engine bay. 😂

I was stuck, couldn't find anyone near me who wanted to try a weld fix. The kit worked out well. To be honest I'm afraid to start spraying on the engine bay in fear that something might fall apart

If your ride is manual the best option is to install the older style iron bellhousing that brings the holes for the three bolt starter. You will spend less money and it will work great. I did it on my 75 Chevy.

I'm no expert, but I read somewhere that the torque converter is only supposed to come out so far. I imagine the spacer that bolts on behind the flexplate was to compensate for the thickness of the bracket so the converter will be in the correct place and not out too far. When you install the converter, you push it into the trans and you hear a couple of clicks as it drops down into the pump. If it is out too far it might come out of the pump. Does that sound right?

Yes correct but the adapter plate is less than the TC tolerance. The center spacer that wasn't used is for a trans swap application.

@@AxlesGarage Thanks, I've got one of these myself. Pulled it from a pickup truck in the junkyard. I did notice multiple exhaust bolt holes stripped and I had to helicoil repair a couple. Also, the outermost starter bolt hole was stripped, I also was able to helicoil repair it. Seems like stripped bolts is a common problem on these vortec big blocks.

Got it all together and got the starter in but the starter gear will not line up with the flywheel it's too high and there's no way to adjusted I think I'm going to have to find a different starter I guess

Great kit but am having some shortfalls with it. When I install starter to plate, the bendix end of starter is hitting the flexplate!. Also when I install the small torque converter adapter to flexplate - and torque bolts, my flexplate is still loose on crank as though I need a spacer between flexplate and TQ adapter. Any advice or similar problems from anyone else?

I did not use the torque converter adapter. Thats only for an early engine without a mounting tab to a later model trans. Not used for the repair I did.

I installed one yesterday n mine starter seems to hit flexplate but not engage ast it sho I ld but wen I bought my 3bolt starter it did say shims may be needed so I'm guessing that will be my next move to pull starter bendex away to allow bendex from starter to extend n engage flexplate n make add or take away shims till it hits rite ima do that today im working with an 89 chevy 5.7 350 I'll be back to spill the outcome ..

It might, I'd call around to the suppliers of this kit. Maybe their tech support will know, or they can tell you the actual manufacturer, then call them to see if it will fit. As for the year of starter, I just told my local mom & pop shop a 3 bolt old chevy style and they knew what I wanted.
