Alyssa - I'm really sorry to hear that! Is he still eating well or refusing food? Given how skinny he is, I would seek professional advice immediately and find an exotic vet who can treat axolotls. Two weeks without food is typically okay for an adult axolotl who has lower metabolism, so I personally would not research on the Internet anymore but would go see a vet who can run some more in-depth tests. Please do let me know what you find out and how your axolotl does!

Really interested video. I remember when I first got an axolotl, he came impacted, which made me somewhat anxious as he was floating and playing dead. But once he passed the gravel he was all good, just cold water and moving the tank in to my bed room so I could make sure I could clean out the small stones before he'd try and eat them again. I don't use any sand or gravel in my tanks but the pet store I got him from was using gravel and it was almost a week before he had passed them.

Hi! Great video! One question, How do you get your axolotl out of the tank? Mine is still young and does not like to be touched by hand..
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Romy Beijersbergen Great question! Most people don't recommend using a net since the axolotl's flailing limbs could get tangled in the mesh. So that leaves a) using your hands or b) scooping them up with a plastic container. Most axolotls don't like being picked up, so sometimes I would ask a friend to help me by holding the bucket or quarantine tub right next to the lip of the aquarium... That way I could swiftly transfer the axie without the risk of dropping him on the ground. Good luck!
@rebornmomma1296 жыл бұрын
I use a smaller Tupperware and just scoop him up!
6 жыл бұрын
Romy Beijersbergen I pick mine up by hand. He doesn’t seem to mind it now. I don’t do it often , only when stripping the tank to clean it thoroughly. I think picking him up by hand is the best way. Nets can tangle their limbs, any tupperware they could jump out of. So, holding them firmly by hand, not too tight, just firm enough so you won’t drop them. Seems he knows now I won’t hurt him, and it’s only for a few seconds, whilst his tank is cleaned. Some get extremely tame and like the interaction, swimming around, onto and nudging hands. Hand feeding Ect. Axolotl are amazing, so cute. Caught mine pushing huge rocks, far bigger, and weighing many times more than him, around his tank. Seems that he fancied a bit of a change, and took up interior design. New Year, a change of scenery. Kept hearing scraping in the tank. Every time I’d look he’d be laid there , perfectly still, looking at me like butter wouldn’t melt. Heard it again, and again, then a few days back I caught him bang to rights. I’d built him a cave from loose rocks, and a piece of Yorkshire stone. Heard it drop, and feared it had cracked the tank bottom, removed it just incase. Never in a million did I think he’d even try to move them. Luckily the tanks fine. Phew!!

@ Lucky you! My axolotl Kalameet hated being handled and would squirm so much in my hands that his slime coat started getting damaged. One time he even fell to the floor, slightly injuring his tail. After that, I was like "Never again! Containers only." I just put my hand on top or use the lid so that he can't jump out. I can't believe your axolotl was into interior decorating. Lol, that is too cool!

Why do you have the glass bowls and jars in their tanks? And your tank set up is amazing! Also, can they be taken out of the water? I am asking it because you said to hold it, and you found working with your hands easier than a towel. Or did you mean using a towel in the tank?
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Deeeekota03 The glass jar and bowl were just used during feeding times to help contain the mess of frozen bloodworms. :)
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Deeeekota03 Axolotls are like fish and shouldn't be taken out of the water unless you have to treat them or move them. I would avoid touching them if at all possible and using a plastic container to catch them if needed. However I do know some people successfully transport them with their bare hands. The only reason I was using my bare hands in the video is because I had to force feed one of my axolotls (outside the water) and I found it was easier to use my hands rather than a towel to hold him still.

Yikes, red leg is pretty serious and definitely should be seen by a vet if at all possible. Here is a link of purportedly safe antibiotics for axolotls: www.axolotl.org/health.htm#list. Sometimes axolotls take a while to adjust to their new surroundings. 2 years ago I got two axies, one of them was barely eating and was hiding all the time. After about two weeks she was eating much better, and she was swimming over to the front of the tank whenever we walked into the room. It is completely normal for axies to act like this when they are moved into a new surrounding.

I really need help. My axolotl used to have a decent weight and diet. I feed her pellets, which I always have. But all of a sudden, she won’t eat. I hand feed her otherwise she doesn’t eat. I hold the pellet in front of her and she turns away or doesn’t do anything and it worries me because she’s extremely skinny.

Would Pimafix Work instead of Salt baths? if so how do you use it , i saw videos of people applying pimafix on the Fungus with cotton swabs but they are mostly Goldfish or betta videos. ty
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Stcrry My breeder recommended using Pimafix as directed when I thought I had my axie had a fungus issue (but it turned out not to be fungus in the end). So it's probably safe to try out and then you can always use salt if the Pimafix doesn't work. :)

Salt baths arnt the best because it stresses them but give them tea baths and clean water is to treat fungus but I know those bolth work...

Thanks for sharing! Salt water dips worked well for me when treating my axolotls for fungus.

hello gamers, good info on the video. My axolotl doesnt want to eat a lot, just one or two small bites of frozen cube bloodworms twice a day. Any idea why he doesnt eat a lot? I just got it and the seller told me it is just a 6 months old axo. Even it doesnt want to eat sinking pellet.
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Sounds like you just got him recently? I would ask the seller what kind of food they were feeding the axolotl and how much food. Usually they'll know best what the axolotl likes to eat. 👍 Otherwise, there's a whole list of foods here that you can try: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/foods2.shtml

Hey guys, does anyone know if it’s okay to salt bath them while they’re regenerating its leg.
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, good question - I've never been asked that before. Is there a reason why you're giving them the salt bath? The leg regeneration should happen on its own if the water quality is good, and the salt could potentially irritate the wound site (depending on how fresh it is).

Doesn’t the salt baths hurt their eyes? Also can you recommend a good brand of tap water cleaner?thanks xxx

Milly Collinson api stresszyme nite-out 2, or seachem prime water conditioner
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the salt baths are irritating for the axolotl, but it's a very good antifungal treatment, which is why you only bath them in the solution for a short period each day. I also like Seachem Prime water conditioner. 👍

What kind of salt is best for salt bath? A sea salt or just normal salt for food??
@millycollinson47255 жыл бұрын
Also good food brands? And what they should eat every day? Or one to two days? I just don’t know how much variety i should be giving her
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Here is a great list of foods you can feed your axolotls: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/foods.shtml. As juveniles, they eat every day and then gradually you'll see their appetite lessen as they stop growing. Some adults only eat 2-3 times a week, so just offer food to them and see if they'll take it. If they don't, you'll gradually start to form a good feeding schedule for them. Hope that helps! :)

My Axolotl have 2 dead gills, a blister on the head and won’t close his mouth. I rescued him 3 weeks ago. I already tried: • Tubbing in cold water with 3 daily water changes a day. • Organic black tea bath • Indian almond leaves bath • Salt bath What should I do, he is eating fine and very active at night.

Hello, it's been a long time since the video, but my axotl can't stay under water. I cleaned its tank, put it in another container and kept it in cold water, but it's still the same reason why it does this.

Hello , I really need you help.. could pls advice me on what type of salt do I use for the salt bath ??
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
I like to use API aquarium salt (amzn.to/2Eq3bMI), which is just a type of rock salt. However, you should be okay to use any kind of salt that is made of sodium chloride (NaCl) and doesn't have any additives like flavorings or dyes. Just be aware that table salt is made of finer granules than aquarium salt, so you may choose to use a little less of it if you wish.

you are the top axolotl expert to my knowledge at the moment, so I was wondering if you know any websites to get healthy axolotls at a good price? (All of mine have been rescues up to this point)
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Awww, thank you! I've found them mostly on the axolotl Facebook groups I joined. Just post a message asking for reputable breeders for your country, and people will immediately flood you with reviews and recommendations. Best of luck and let me know what you get! :)
