I'm English & just watched this post from Australia, where i've come to possibly start a new future, but every time i look at the history of our land & no matter how much dark & light there were in them periods, I get this feeling inside. No matter how much i try & escape from the present period of struggle, I feel this massive draw back to this land, it has a very special magnetic affect.

I served my county, I then went to uni..I now help kids all over the world get an education. That is serving your county and humanity. Reading many of the comments below makes me sick and almost sad to be English. For the love of what ever God you believe in understand this: Nothing you earn or collect in life will be more important than the gift of freedom, knowledge or life you give to another human being. I like to think that that is what being English, British or Human is all about.

I'm not proud. With Tories in power who only work for the upper classes, bankers who want our economy closely linked with USA banks encouraging greed and debt and their tax dodging donors, I feel like the lyrics to the song: You gave me my birth.Then you made me pay. What is it worth. Cast me away You've really done it now. Dying in my arms You stand here with nothing. But you've still got English charm You cut your own throat. Then you let it bleed Misleading your people. From what they all need Roots forgotten. That's what we all say But what does it matter. You're the USA Why is it England. I feel like rubbish on your streets Why is it when I care If feel incomplete. Why does our future seem such a feat
@portcullis56225 жыл бұрын
Today I am ashamed and disappointed. The election result was a victory for greed, avarice and stupidity. Do people in poor, run down northern towns really think that the Tories and Brexit will help them? I can not believe how many ordinary people voted for the Tories. Now the Basty Party have a majority, l genuinely fear for the poor and disadvantaged and worry about the next five years.

To be honest, even as a 17 year old, I would have to agree with you for the most part. A lot of us do complain about what the governments doing but few take action. It annoys me how much complete shit is in the charts, and that's partly why I like the Levs. They dont care how popular they are,they play for enjoyment and to get their increasingly relevant messages across in style! If they get more fans Great! but they will always have a huge devoted fan base no matter how many awards they win.

I'm defintitely agreeing with the comments on show of hands! Another band I love. Like the levs they have immensely powerful lyrics, but also a certain level of technical brilliance which the Levs lack. But I like them being rough around the edges. It's what gives them soul. They are a protest group anyway. Anyway some great discussion going on here : )
@luornu2 жыл бұрын
i like this song because it is a valuable example of reclaiming love for England from the far right. You can love your country without being blind to its faults and misdeeds. The true flag of England by the way is the White Dragon flag which is counterpart to the Welsh Red Dragon, the cross of St George is the Christianized flag that was imposed with the forced conversion to Christianity. Unfortunately the White Dragon has been hijacked and co opted by the racist far right because of course it has, it needs to be reclaimed from them!

The younger generation seem to care more for fighting each other than looking for real world enemies. If musical attitudes reflect youth culture i.e. hippies rose at a time of growing hostillities, and punk when this country was in a grip of apathy, then apart the likes of the Levs, ( in the 90s) the youth of now seem to me the most unamaginative, musically ignorant generation who couldnt give a fig what this goverment and royalty get up to in there name.

I honestly dont understand how this convo got onto race with out trawling back through it, theres not one line that refers to a nationalist or multi cultural view. It basically says what any english person who cares truly feels, we were born here, we love the heritage and the nature of our pleasant land but we feel we've been sold out by our politicians to american culture and capitalism, and certainly since the industrial revolution and before the working class have always been treated as scum.

@county1974 I hope you realise the irony of your comment! And anyway this is a song about patriotism. I'm sorry that I included the multinational reference in the video, but consider it more about people creating conflict over multinationalism, rather than being proud of our country as it is, accepting others (yes, we could do better, but we could do far, far worse!).

Some people say it´s too patriotic, or anythiing alike, but let me say one thing, I'm brazilian, I was born down at the south of the country, were the gaucho culture is stronger than anything else, and we are trully pround of it. we respect all other cultures, but we are just proud of our own, just like The Levellers are and so they sing. England is their home, it is a great place, so what is the f*** to shout how they like it and how they wish it to be better?

To the pirate paul - if you have stood up for country and fought I salute you and respect you. But you must understand there are many different levels of interaction between the population and government - its called freedom of expression, and therefore surely one of the rights you are fighting for. I'm ex naval myself, and there are many different kinds of people I've met out in the real world. Live and let live, and support the underdog.

@tribetng Eh? I think you'll find it was built in the Neolithic (pre-bronze age!). Also it is in England and I think it's been here long enough to be accepted as English. I also have difficulty thinking of many groups who could be classed as more "English " than the celts. By that line of argument you could say that nothing man-made in England is English since we're all from Africa anyway.
