i've seen people describing this song as being about depression or being depressing, and i find it's actually pretty uplifting. she's acknowledging the darker parts of being an idol and all the problems, but saying that it's still her chosen life and that she has dreams of a better future she's working towards. a wonderful song

uplifting might be a bit confusing word. not suited for everyone, as you can see. but I do feel the way you did. while there are facts that there's a hardship on her way(negative), she also doesn't stop on such things and keeps going on. (positive). both N and P exist. but while she sees the Negative, She WANTS and DOES the positive. I think that part is much more important than the N part. since, well... she passed away. while even very before death, she still wanted to do more things. and she wanted to see her children do them as well. I think that gives us a reason to see her wish rather than those harsh facts. uplifting? yeah I guess, in a pile of sadness. but that's what makes her shiny, beautiful, an idol full of lies.

I Think it's a bit of both. It's depressing because it's Ai critiquing the entertainment industry and how she has to be perfect to be loved by her fans. She can't be herself and start struggling with her self identity. That of course is until she had her own kids where she could show a bit of herself that pleased the fans. She started getting hopeful for her future until it was cut short. And now her kids while not optimistic are hopeful to and join the entertainment industry trying to make it a better place.

Im always in awe how yoasobi's english versions not only retains the original meaning but also phonetically sound like the original yet still "english relevant" in its own way. Like the lyrics apply so much to the idol industry. Also i know "perfect ai" is supposed to be a wordplay on Ai's name and "love" but i cant help but to notice that it can also make sense if you interpret it as "AI" because being an idol is almost like being an AI to your fans, like youre not really "real" but you're there and always perfect, always replying with the answers that the algorithm says is the "correct" answer, and you are expected to never do anything besides what they tell you to update: i just read the short story "45510" (written by aka) that this song was based on and it hits so much differently now I know the context
