Watched this movie on Doordarshan when was at 7th standard...since then has known just one thing in life ....love is unconditional and about this song in 1990 when i saw this movie the very next day i lied to my father for some money bought a cassette since i wasn't born in a digitized era ...i bought my first empty cassette and recorded the song from a music shop...moreover why i did so was, i couldn't digest the climax neither then nor till date ...this is how it touched my soul not just heart...my story for Sadma !! What a song! For most of Ilayaraja's songs he took under an hour to write the score, with notes for each instrument written separately as it occurred to him and copied by assistants and musicians and rehearsed. The magic happens when finally recorded. In many interviews his musicians have said they become spell bound when playing with the whole orchestra and listening it for the first time (no mixing separately those days and most musicians these days do not know for which song they are playing for). Ilaiyaraja said in one of his rare interviews that he is unable to write the score fast enough as the ideas come to him as he does each instrument at a time. Every single note you hear in every single instrument is written by him and no changes are allowed. Musicians have to play exactly what has been written. I am personally a big fan of his bass lines which I think is outstanding and takes the song to a different level. For those who are not aware, Ilayaraja is a gold medalist in Classical Guitar from Trinity College of Music, UK and was a leading session guitarist for many composers in the early 70s before he started on his own. Many of his compositions are now covered by leading bass players like Aalap Raju ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6Xclp1_qauZiLc) where one can appreciate the intricacies of the bass guitar with counter point notes to the melody note. He is the happiest when the musicians play the notes as he conceived it as you can see in this video. True genius.
