Be sure to run the glow plugs for at least 10 seconds before you crank it, and it will start a lot easier. Also: I'd check the opposite side of that "hole" you plugged to make sure it's not supposed to be there. It could be a water intake for cooling the exhaust.

Residual fuel from all the times you cranked it. Diesels are difficult to start in cold. Glow plugs help by providing the heat for initial ignition then when the engine is up to temp the compression alone is enough to ignite the fuel. Great video and good to see Smalls.

Y'all two blow me away. I'd have quit five times before ever making it to the fishing hole. The lack of "quit" in you two is beyond commendable. For you both to choke down all of the angst, frustration, fatigue, etc. and put on a smile for the camera...it only speaks to your character and work ethic. Great content.
@theducklinghomesteadandgar66392 жыл бұрын
@Ken Johnson I totally agree with you, except, they don't put on a smile for the camera.... IMHO.....from my observations they're genuinely happy and smiling because every thing that happens presents a new challenge to conquer and there are few other things they love more than they love conquering, well then you can see how it would make them happy!!! AND when multiple things happen like that, if you look at it like you would a month later and be laughing while telling the story, then you would also be laughing at it now, as it can get to where it is an absurd number of issues on the regular for them. I think some of the lets just do it without much planning is part of it in two ways, to make it more interesting and to make it funny, so in a wat it is kind of planned and in other ways, it's fun and funny!!!!

As other comments before me have said, the smoke is most likely an exhaust leak somewhere in the line. Diesel engines have a tendency to puff plenty of it when they haven't been started for a few weeks or sometimes even just a few days. Fire up, let her sit to warm up for a few minutes, and you're ready to run. All that said, I see it as a blessing in disguise because you just found where your CO is coming from.

Greetings from the province of New Brunswick, Canada. I am a subscriber for a long time and always look forward to your videos! Your lifeboat is amazing. With a different propeller you could probably get more speed. Don’t forget that a diesel needs time to warm up the glow plugs. When trying to start it, there should be a middle position on the switch when turning to give the glow plugs time to warm up. Give it 30 seconds, then continue turning the switch until the starter engages. There might also be a separate switch to push in the middle position that you have to push or turn to warm up the glow plugs, before you engage the starter. I think it smoked and stalled because the glow plugs were not warmed up and you flooded the cylinders with diesel. Contact the older gentleman you bought it from and see if he can give you the proper starting procedure.😀🇨🇦

i would definitely do some research on your specific engine, but as others have mentioned, you need to wait for the glow plugs to heat up a bit before starting the engine. Also, when checking the oil, wipe off the dipstick, put it back in and then check it. It will make sure you get an accurate reading of the oil level. But the color and viscosity of the oil is another thing. But overall its an awesome boat and im interested to see some kind of renovation to it, doesnt have to be an all out reno though lol

love that the potential disaster turned out to be nothing! you guys are great doing these videos together. everyone who says lifeboats "suck" is probably talking about the ride -- she's totally fine on a flat lake like that but you take her out on the ocean and she's gonna be pitching and rolling all over the place because she's designed for much more weight. good news is, you start doing your remodeling on the inside and you'll add weight fast -- put in some furniture etc. and she'd sit lower in the water for you pretty quick. I think I would cut out that ballast compartment you were talking about using as a bed, cut out the side seat bulkheads and the foam and then start building out from there. before any of that tho you probably want to sand off that paint and repaint her! start thinking about colors! In England, there are, roughly, 2000 miles of navigable canals. Upon which many thousands of people live on aboard "Narrowboats", that are either converted historic barges from the 1700's, 1800's, and early 1900's, or of the vast majority of purpose built boats, as full capacity tiny homes. Some are incredibly laid out into the most comfortable homes you can imagine as a boat. Full kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and usually a twin or queen size bed, or two. One of the popular homes, are converted lifeboats, same as yours. Gutted out, and rebuilt to be as roomy and useful as any large motorhome....that floats.

The shape just makes such a cool boat, for not much money you can stand up way high off the water and there’s so much room on the inside

The smoke was probably just a leaking exhaust which there can be a lot of when cold starting an old diesel engine. That could also lead you to where the Corbon monoxide could have been coming from. Also let that baby warm up a bit after you start it so she can get up and stretch before you make her run after sitting so long.
