TwistedSwivler I agree, my favorite statement of his is one rather unknown when he said to an Italian newspaper after the incident " Some people can become champion in a chicane, now I too have become champion in a corner". As much as it would have been better for him if he had beaten Prost in the race, I think it was better for F1 to have had this outcome. This only cemented the greatness of that battle which will never be eclipsed but also, the way he made this retribution back to Prost/Balestre for 89, was the most poetic justice I have ever seen in any sport.)

2:11 it is pretty apparent (not just to an F1 driver, but to literally anyone watching) that Senna couldn't have passed Prost on the inside of that turn with Prost on the line so tight. History has proved Senna to be the GOAT in F1, but that was a very dirty maneuver.

Rush was a great movie about Hunt vs Lauda. Ron Howard should make a Rush 2 with Senna vs Prost it could be even better, you could write a good script about it ( Senna's faith vs Prost science, their rivalry, the way they made peace together just several minutes before Ayrton's fatal crash,...)

+Hans611 my guess is that he was worried about what would happen because he knew he would crash as you can see in his own words: "today is no way,today has to be my way, I dont care what happens" but he had no other option he had to drive he wanted to win above anything. In Imola as we all know he wasnt happy about the car and he was also worried because of rubens crash and the death of roland ratzenberger. Many ppl says he knew he would crash in Imola even before the start of the race,some ppl says he wanted to skip Imola race (Frank Williams is one of them) but he could not because he retired in Brazil and in Japan he had to score some points. For me that tension was the conflict inside of him between the fear and the desire to win above anything even above his own safety and life.

@@layon99 Prost did not crash into Senna in 1989 and it was not a high speed or dangerous collision. Senna was rightly disqualified for cheating. After the crash in 1990 Senna should have been banned from F 1 for good and stripped of all points for the year.

'And then suddenly, pole position was mysteriously moved to the dirty side of the circuit' - Dennis Absolute crap. Pole position was in the same place in 1990 as it was in 89, 88, and 87.
@John-mi2rt
@John-mi2rt 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Iuculano if what senna and McLaren said about suzuka 90 is true in that they were given assurances by the Japanese officials before qualifying that they would move pole to the left side of the track then effectively it was moved back to the dirty side.
@anthonyiuculano6002
@anthonyiuculano6002 8 жыл бұрын
+John19501000 Why did Senna feel he had the right to request a change like that anyway? Wouldn't that constitute a significant change to the track? The pole position had been on the same side of the grid since 87. My guess is, they decided not to do it, if indeed they had even been considering it as McLaren liked to claim they had, for that exact reason.
@John-mi2rt
@John-mi2rt 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Iuculano Senna was right wasn't he. Pole was changed the following year to the left side and has been there for the last 25 years. My point is if McLaren were told the pole would be changed they began qualifying with the impression that pole would be on the left. After qualifying ,for whatever reason and in their eyes it was changed back to the right and dirty side. It explains Ron Dennis's comment.

They could have done it for 1991, because that would not be considered a substantial change to the track over the course of the race weekend.

@anthonyiuculano6002 8 жыл бұрын
stevejh69 Yes I'm well aware of what happened... maybe even more aware than you are, considering that, whether or not there would have been this controversy at Suzuka, Senna would have lost anyway, because he crashed out in Australia. 'A bit of payback'... I don't ever remember payback being deemed acceptable in sport. He was cheering either way, because that was neither a legal nor moral way to win the '90 title. Senna also lost the title in Estoril when he crashed with Mansell (which he could have avoided by letting Mansell go past, since he was getting black flagged anyway). And he could have waited for a straight to pass Prost as Suzuka...

Poor Senna fanboys, so deluded and taken in by the movie, Senna was as usual wanting everything to be done for him, he did not get his way and made a big fuss about it. As for the deliberate dangerous collision, what a very bad example to his many fans. Senna did not believe he could beat Prost on the track and was afraid Prost would win the race and quite possibly the title so he made sure Prost could not finish the race, he did not care that this time he took himself out, unlike 1989 when having put Prost out he was able to get an illegal push start and cheat but he failed and was disqualified. Senna should have been excluded from the whole year for the collision in 1990. Prost was rightly 5 times world champion and Senna stole it.

The difference Senna could drive, it is a pity he did not think he was good enough to beat Prost and had to resort to cheating. You obviously are too cowardly to even use your own name. Poor little thief.

+John19501000 Completely different to 1989 when Senna tried to force Prost out so he, Senna could win, he failed and was caught out for cheating and for dangerous driving, 1990 when Senna again was afraid Prost would beat him and he, Senna resorted to the dangerous deliberate collision. Balestre did not disqualify Prost. Senna cheated and was caught out, too bad he was allowed to get away with it in 1990. I wonder why Balestre did not have Senna banned from driving for such a dangerous deliberate collision, maybe he was helping Senna because he hated Prost.

+Barrie Rodliffe Do you type your garbage with a straight face? 'Balestre hated Prost'. Another gigantic lie which is irrelevant anyway. The fra after Prost's name was good enough for Balestre. I'll repeat again Balestre admitted helping Prost at Suzuka 89.

Balestre did hate Prost and it was not Balestre who disqualified Senna in 1989, which is irrelevant anyway Senna still would not have won in 1989 even if he got away with it at Suzuka.. Why did Balestre help Senna in 1990? I`ll repeat again Balestre never did a thing to help Prost, why did he help Senna in 1990? You type rubbish under all the names you use, how many is it now?

Don't really agree with senna's move here, but there's also some background: senna was worried that if he got on pole he'd have been on the dirty side of the track and asked it to the owner of the track or not sure who, but he told him pole would be on the clean side, then as you can see at start it wasn't like that, 2nd place was on the clean side, so prost started better, so at that point, since he wasn't treated fairly, he took him out; I think if it weren't for this punishing the pole sitter by putting him on dirty side he'd have raced all the way.

"Great he died"That's quite disrespectful to say. Also why are you guys hating on Prost so much? I mean I'm not a Prost fan but if you looked at the 1989 Japan race,it's a racing incident.I can't really blame them both but still. And Prost was a good driver as well. Why people are saying "Oh Prost won because of someone etc etc etc". Prost in the 80s was winning races in like 14th 15th places. And during the 90s he was driving a Ferrari car that was the 4th best car to wins and podiums. Now I don't hate Senna.But I just don't undestand why people are hating Prost. Senna in this crash did pretty much a risky decision to crash Prost in T1. And people would be like "Oh Prost closed the door and Senna hit him" Senna was on a mission to crash out Prost because as of a revenge for the 89 race. And Before you say "You hate Senna!!" I don't. He is unquestionably The greatest driver of all time (Even though I have some disagreements about it". He almost won in one of the worst cars (Toleman) in Monaco..IN WET. And was unbeatable during his era.
