If the Khmer people were truly prosperous in the past, why can't Thais or Siamese people today understand the Khmer language (different language families). Today only the three southern Isan provinces of Thailand that border Cambodia understand it. The Tai language family is spoken in Laos, eastern Burma, Assam, southern China, and northern Malaysia.

Siamese means "Those who Steal Land or Land Grabber" and they were not originated from the Khmer Empire people. They came from other parts of the region. Therefore, why would they understood spoken Khmer language. Siam did not like to be called Siam so they changed their name to Thais instead. The older Khmer generations knew their history very well compared to this modern days...

why not siam? i am thai and my company name starts with siam. many companiese in thailand including japanese and american companies still have word 'siam' in their company names. better go back to study before making any comment any claims นะเหมน

Ever heard of Orissa? Kalinga? Northeast India today have people who speak a cousin language of Mon-Khmer. Genetics shows that these people were probably the oldest to live in South Asia. There’s plenty of other Ethnic groups migrated into South Asia over the years for hundreds and thousands of years to create a mixed ethnic society in South Asia . So what does Pali have to do with the “Khmers”? Everything.
