Being from Ohio and not far from Wapakoneta where the Wapak "sounds like Wapauk" cast iron was made, you made me chuckle. I needed that on this dreary day!! I'm new to learning about "Vintage" cast iron. I've used them in the past quite alot but just never thought much about it until recently. Loved your video !!

Very informative. I never realized what the ring on the bottom of the pan was; just assumed it was part of the casting process. Most of my pans are lodge's and wagner's; some are no name. There's one piece of cast ironware I have used no more than 4 or 5 times over the decades. It's a turkey roaster and weighs more than a small turkey. The roaster is used as a storage container now and at one time a doorstop. I don't have any vintage cookware since they were all bought at retail stores. One thing I have to tell you, when I was stationed at Tinker AFB, OK the wife and I dropped into a local dollar discount store and saw a bunch of cast ironware for sale. Believe it or not we got 2 dutch ovens and lids for $4 , a chicken fryer for $4, medium and small skillets for $3 Must have been about 75 lbs of ironware. The owner told me he was surprised we bought as much because he thought he wouldn't be able to give it away. The fun part was getting it back home in ME. The quartermaster at the base had a fit about the weight.

I would like to have a turkey roaster, haven't seen one for sale. I spent a lot of time around Tinker back in the late 70's wish I would have started buying Cast Iron back then. Thanks for watching.

The number on the handle or on the bottom of the pan No.8 No.9 was a reference to the hole it fit in on the old Glenwood stoves. They had removable lids called eyes, and the pan fit in the eye for cooking.

Someone (whether it is your or someone else does not matter to me) should make a cast iron poster or book that has some cast iron information (e.g. progression, identification, and quality). As someone who has a few pieces and is beginning to collect more non-lodge pieces, I would really enjoy seeing all of the variety out there.

Good video. My mother just turned over to my wife 2 cast iron skillets. One is an Erie and from some research think it is called a griddle. Just discovered I have a Griswold #9 griddle in my cabinet. Makes beautiful pancakes, and I got it for nothing! Seriously, my parents probably got it from a friend or bought it at a garage sale. They used it for camping, then stuck it in a box in the garage for years until I bought a house. Box came with me, along with the griddle. I've just been using it and appreciating it without realizing it's value! Beautiful glassy finish on top, and I'm gonna keep using it for Saturday morning pancakes for years to come.

I tried the fire method on a old rusted griddle that I found in my barn. I guess the fire was hotter then I realized. This morning I pulled it out of the pit and it had warped. I wish you were here and would clean up a REALLY ugly skillet I bought for a dollar a few years ago. I don't have the strength to lift it, much less clean it. Also ~ I was given a NEW skillet some 25 yrs ago. (It's still "new"!) I've never seen one like it and know nothing about it. On the bottom It has a duck flying over a body of water during a full moon. Might you be able to tell me anything about it? It "lovingly" hangs on a kitchen wall. Again, I can't lift it, and even if I could, I can't use it as I have a ceramic top stove. It does put a smile on my face, however. (As does your video!) I plan to watch more this evening. God bless you, dear one!

Thanks for a really interesting video. My wife has been on at me to get her some non-enamelled cast-iron cookware. She's French, so it had to be Le Creuset but they charge silly money and after looking again, she decided that she wanted Lodge. Your comment at about 12:15 that the surface finish on modern Lodges isn't as good as the old ones is a real disappointment. Finding old cast-iron cookware here in England is like trying to find hen's teeth. It's all snapped up before it ever gets to the marketplace. I have a Griswold pan that looks like 1940’s one you showed, stamped 710C on the back at 6 o’clock, and a 9 on the back and also the front where the handle joins the pan. It says cast iron, but the inside and top of the handle is very smooth and shiny, like stainless would look. The outside and underside of the handle looks like cast iron, but grayish, not black. It’s almost as if a cast iron pan was coated with nickel or chrome. Is it a fake or? I scrolled through all the comments to see if anyone else had mentioned one like this. I have not cooked with it yet, it was in a box lot of pans from an estate sale.

USA and below that 710 with a C underneath.

No cowboys ever made their own pans. A foundry is a huge operation with the level of skill and craftsmanship necessary to make thin wall castings for skillets and griddles is out of reach for the average cowpoke. The gate marks you see on the early pans are the result of the mold cavity fill point. There might be six pans made in a single pour so the tree (now called sprues) would enter in the center of the pan. More modern molds have the fill pint at the lip of the pan where it is easily ground off so you will never see it.

I have a cast iron griswold skillet that has the name "victor" stamped on it, can anyone tell me some history on this?
@AlexT-sy6nm4 жыл бұрын
From the booniehicks.com article on identifying Griswold cast iron skillets: "Victor cast iron skillets [...] were made for around 50 years, circa 1880s-1930s. It was Griswold’s budget-friendly grade of cast iron. . The Victor logo also changed over the 50 years. Simply marked in the beginning with Victor at the 12 o’clock position like Erie skillets. Later Victor cast iron skillets became embellished. Griswold Manufacturing marketed Victor cast iron as a lower grade however this does not mean lower quality. Victor skillets have super smooth cooking surfaces".

Dude go to a hardware store. Buy a 1 pound jar of lye. Add it to 5 gallons of water in a plastic tote. Soak as many old crusty pans as you can fit for 3 to 6 days. Scrub with SOS pad and season.

A couple of months after my mother passed away, my siblings and I were going through her house to get it ready to sell. My sister was on the way to the trash with a cast iron skillet. I stopped her and said "What are you doing?" She said she was throwing out this old back greasy pan. I said "It's cast iron, I'll take it." She called me nuts and said "Ok, if you want this old thing I don't care." The pan she was about to toss was a Wagner Ware number 6 a smooth bottom made during the 1935 to 1959 era.

Your newer "Made in USA" 12-inch skillet is from Birmingham Stove & Range, and it dates to the later 1960s. You've got a great video here with your history of Griswold. I also have a video on identifying cast iron that especially looks at pans other than Griswold and Wagner, that your viewers may find useful. I've added a link to your own video at the 26 minute mark, as it mentions Wagner and Griswold: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJnQdXWsnLmKfKc
