The enormous succes of soccer team AZ '67 Alkmaar in the season 1980/1981 was already anounced by winning the Dutch Cup in 1978, by beating big names (like Barcelona 4-0!) at international tournaments, and by just missing the Dutch title in 1980.
But in this golden year everything fell on its place. The team had been playing a couple of years together already, and coach Georg Kessler discovered that the 4-4-2 system fitted the best to this team. Enjoy our heroes: the experienced goalkeeper Eddy Treytel, the fast wing-defenders Hugo Hovenkamp and Richard van der Meer, the rock-solid central defenders John Metgod and Ronald Spelbos, the inventive midfielders Peter Arntz, Jos Jonker, Jan Peters and architect Krysten Nygaard, and the amazing attackers Kees Kist, Kurt Welzl and Pier Tol, who had to fight for 2 positions only and so gave Kessler a brainbraking puzzle every match.
In part 15 you can see the return of the UEFA cup final, played in the Olympic Stadium of Amsterdam (for De Hout was too small). Can AZ, with a bit more concentration, achieve a miracle and wipe the 3-0 away? Well, at least the spectators of this match were the winners, so don't skip this one!
