At 4:33 you should have made the conveyor go to the corner instead of the center, this way the pistons would be in a spiral with the final piston being in the center, making you not need that tail you added at the end saving materials and possibly making the structure 1 block shorter
@altioar5 жыл бұрын

Instead of making upwards conveyors in the drill tower you could just use more pirtons in oposite direction.
@PatrickHansen1015 жыл бұрын
That seems like the intuitive way to go, but it will actually just make the pistons counteract eachother. Meaning that the piston tower will expand, but the drill won't move :)
@AquariusGhostHunter11 ай бұрын
@@PatrickHansen101well the thing that you are over looking is that opposing pistons are not to be engaged at the same time. so you could probably condense your piston array even more. any piston's facing up would have to be extended out so that they may be retracted while downward facing pistons extend.
@PatrickHansen10111 ай бұрын
@@AquariusGhostHunter when this was built, that wasn't possible :) The size was only doable because the conveyors take upp less than a block of space (and only attach end to end) Side-by-side without spacing would just explode if you even managed to put them there. That being said, absolutely, as long as clang doesn't get you, replacing conveyors with extended pistons would be more space efficient

@PatrickHansen1014 жыл бұрын
Hey, it's what the video is for! :) You're probably running into one of two problems, both with the same solution! Either your cargo gets filled with ore, and then your drills get filled, making them heavier or your drills are getting wedged. *In either case*, try increasing the Max Impulse Axis/NonAxis on the pistons, should fix the issue. Beware though, increasing this value too much may allow drilling rig to self-destruct :p

So noob here, I was following along your video to build the drill tower. My plan was to build that and then the vehicle around it and make a mobile base. I got everything built and went to define the max rotation limits like you did (360 top, 270 side). As soon as I defined the 270 the entire thing blew up and blew up my base/pad/shitshack. I'm about to restart today but I'd love to understand how/why I made a bomb out of the drill tower 😭😭😭😭. Any advice would be great!
@PatrickHansen1013 жыл бұрын
I actually did the same thing in my recent build video, had to start all over. I think one of two things happened: 1: You set the max/min limits to not include the current angle of the rotor, this will result in physics-breaking acceleration and wreck your stuff, in most cases. 2: Diabolus ex Machina, the game just decided that it did not like what you're doing and decided to blow your stuff up, that's what happened in my case. Best suggest i have is to set rotor limits before you begin building, or switch to using Hinges instead, they seem more stable (but still set the limit before building the tower!)
@changsplace4 жыл бұрын
Great video. Thank you for it. followed your steps. When I got to the point of setting the parameters for the rotor, I tried to lay it down and all it did was slam down very fast on the vehicle. I gave the rotor the same parameters I saw on the video. What am I doing wrongs. Please help

Try raising the power/torque on the rotor, it may have too much mass in one end. Also make sure "Share Inertia Tensor" is turned off on the rotor.
@Grottizy3 жыл бұрын
any ideas on why it might explode every time it's not ported to a base? the dill loves exploding but only in survival
@Grottizy3 жыл бұрын
Sorry on the loading of the game is when it explodes but only when its not connected to a base Via a connector
@danielhawkins74553 жыл бұрын
If that happens from loading in, you might have the same problem as me. My issue was that I forgot to turn on share inertia tensor for ALL the pistons AND rotors. The world would load fine, but then I noticed the drill arm had begun to vibrate slightly. It became rapidly more violent, actually tossing the entire rig around, until the entire arm split in several places and threw everything far in all directions, including the huge rig chassis, almost like an explosion. Not sure if you checked share inertia tensor for everything, but since you say connecting to a static grid solves the issue, doing that would make the rig grid static which is changing the state of the base rotor grid. Make sure EVERYTHING has share inertia tensor activated, including the rotors. Otherwise, not sure what's going on, but rotors and pistons are a likely bet on the source of something like that, especially if changing grids between dynamic and static has an effect.

Hey bro. I was testing the world from the workshop, but the rig doesn't work so well. First, I had to add a landing gear due to the weight of the drills when they fill up. @AngelOfChaos1884 жыл бұрын
@@PatrickHansen101 the center most ones directly connected to the rotor. It seemed to take longer to break when I didnt rotate the drill head, but still broke after the third hole. Also as far as my twist goes it's mostly cosmic. But I'm using batteries and hydrogen engines as I have not located uranium. But the whole drill part is the same
@PatrickHansen1014 жыл бұрын
@@AngelOfChaos188 how odd, I've never had that problem! Hmm, only reason I can see would be that the block is somehow bring slammed into the rotor, or that you have the rotor too far in allowing it to hit adjacent blocks. Make sure "share inertia tensor" is turn on on all pistons, maybe set rotor offset to max. Also make sure you don't run out of cargo space, the drills will get very heavy. Lastly, make sure that the speed on the pistons isn't too high, making the pistons squish the drilling head because it can't drill fast enough
