Not sure what happened here not very clear but maybe this will tear up the situation about giving way. :- www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/waterways-safety-and-rules/rules/giving-way

This video should be used as an excellent learning tool for any new maritime students on how to handle a situation like this!

Both are under Engine, common courtesy let’s the commercial boat have the clear passage ! But the Cat is French!!! They don’t follow any rules 😮

I wonder about this one. That is a very expensive cat. It may be under crewed charter. The skipper may be commercially qualifed. I mean Francesco Schettino wasn't a shining example of how large cruise ships should be properly sailed. The Corsican operator of the cat may have a better explanation of what was going on.

I sail in a shipping port. The harbourmaster has imposed a local rule - ships have the rights at all times, no exceptions. All small vessels give way and keep out of the way. It works.

I wouldnt consider this to be an 'incident". I think it would more properly be considered the avoidance of an incident.

Some think the sailboat, under sail or power, has the right of way, either because of it's "sailing" or because it is being overtaken under power, which it obvious is. No, not true, because a RIM (Restricted In Maneuverability) vessel has right of way. The cruise vessel is obviously in that situation. Yes I am retired but had a Master's license.

Nice video. Sound signals are a mystery to many skippers. I saw no great problem. I don't think the cruise ship was at risk, although many ports have exclusion zones around large vessels and some noteable ports have detection systems in place under the water. Fines for breaches are enormous.
@omegaseamaster1550
@omegaseamaster1550 Жыл бұрын
No great problem?? Well, the sound signals where sent as the Captain or Pilot did not understand the intentions of the smaller vessel. The larger vessel was constrained by her draft and ability to maneuver hence the blasts from the ships horn. I am not a harbour pilot, but I did stay a Motel 6 -2.0 Express last night :)

No incident here, common sense prevailed. The pilot boat stood by to ensure the ship has enough sea room.

The catamaran slowed down and deviated off to the right in order to give way to the cruise ship!

@@stevenward4162 The Practicos boat - was it a harbour patrol or pilot boat. Looks like it may got between the ship and the catamaran to ensure that the cat stayed clear. Is that correct?
@stevenward4162
@stevenward4162 Жыл бұрын
@@dalydegagne1839 The Practicos boat looks to me to be a Pilot boat ! As to what the person on the pilot boat actually said to the skipper on the catamaran to get him to slow down and give way to the Azamara ship is open to interpretation! Seems to me the skipper of the catamaran should have know better in the first place! Surely the skipper of the catamaran was not completely oblivious to the cruise ship coming behind him?Would you walk in the middle of a narrow road with a bus coming up behind you? No; you stand aside and let the bus pass, of course! I'm also wandering if some kind of fine may may have been issued to the yacht skipper too! Anyway, this is my common sense worth of this situation!

Sail boat has right of way when not under command or when sailing in open water only. 3 blasts I am going astern, 1 blast starboard and 2 blasts to port so signals are confusing. 5 n Blasts means unsure of your intentions or get out of the way,

A sailboat under power is a power driven vessel and no longer has right of way over another PDV.
