I love the channel but watching this rebuild has been an amazing experience. It's crazy for such a big machine that makes such power where every part is way heavy requires the skills of a watchmaker to assemble ! You are so lucky to be helped by a first class team. I am so looking forward to the first start up, well I guess Justin is more excited to make that happen than I am. :)

Yep and IMO, that's why you shouldn't have your engine overhauled by a "truck shop"--you need someone who assembles engines every day to get the most life out the process. Well, the one notable exception is Warren (if you know, you know).

As a retired engineer I have the greatest respect for the level of knowledge and skill that Allison possesses. You can always tell how much an engineer knows their stuff by how routinely they talk about something as though it was common knowledge. Allison obviously had a very good teacher and was a very good learner. Respect to you Allison.

When I still worked turning wrenches we were told not to touch the bearing surface with our fingers. The theory was that the oil on your hands was a detergent oil and it could cause premature failure of the bearing or pitting.

Did somebody measure the crank shaft or did they just put the same size bearing back in? I would have thought they would have put the rod bearings in before installing the piston. Really enjoying this rebuild. What a great opportunity to work with somebody that has the experience and know how. Allison knows her stuff, great job.
@Albertalorian
@Albertalorian 3 жыл бұрын
Unless there is damage to the crank, you just use standard size bearings, the journals are extremely hard and won't lose size. The Rod bearings are heavy, and like to fall out of the rods going in, so you get the piston rod/assemblies in, then rotate them into place like the mains.

Have to say Allison is amazing. Such a knowledgeable young woman. Don't know if you are paying her to help, or she's offering her services, but you damn sure better be giving her a tip regardless. Her knowledge is immense, and worth every penny! Not discrediting your own knowledge/work, Justin. But that woman makes or breaks your rebuild. Treat her kindly! Gonna throw this out there - I'd personally LOVE a shop tour. Not so much for the shop, but the technicians in the shop. Go over a quick bio on their expertise/years in the field. Would be rather interesting. Plus, I'm sure, give some free publicity to Haggai. And these folks deserve all the work they can handle and then some! Hometown, family sort of crew. I'm not a trucker, but If I was? I'd PAY fuel and time, plus the repair bill to come see these kind folks for KNOWLEDGEABLE, PROFESSIONAL, DONE RIGHT, repairs! Good mechanics/technicians, whether for consumer vehicles, or professional, are hard to come by. These folks take it to the next level. Again, if I was a driver, let alone Owner op, I'd go absolutely out of my way to have my truck repaired by them. No one else would touch it. And that's saying something. I HATE mechanics touching my vehicles. I'd much rather do the work myself. Considering service manuals are cheap and again, good mechanics/technicians are absolutely hard to come by. You have an absolute gold mine befriending them and becoming family. I sincerely hope, this fact isn't lost on you. I honestly wish, you, Haggai, and specifically Allison all the success in the world. God works in mysterious ways, and he truly gave you a blessing by meeting the Haggai team.

just as a help if you. choose to. use it i did for years, take a longer head bolt and put in head were there a shorter bolt goes get just before your about to set head down it will. act as guide and will stop the head from any sliding sideways or back and forth. scratching or damaging the gasket.. and we were taught to keep your fingers off of the bearing face surfaces, acids in fingers getting into the bearing material before you lube it , also its better to when spreading the prelube on the bearings to. wipe in the same direction any thing on the finger or work glove will be worked out ( not trying to sound pushy but i have worked for cummins for almost 40 years before retiring )

You are blessed to have friends like Allison and the rest of the guys at the shop! I was hoping you would be finished by Friday afternoon so you could be back home with your family for the weekend. It is going to be close. Not many truck drivers can say they assisted in the rebuilding of their engine. Assisted is probably not the right word, as you did a lot more than just assisting. But Allison was the surgeon and teacher. I have watched the progress of the build every night, it has been better than watching TV! I know you will feel more confident driving the rig down the road after the rebuild. I hope someone will discuss the break-in procedure for the rebuild. Hopefully you will be back on the road next week making some money.

I admit to not being at all familiar with Cummins but I would like to propose some comments: 1. Since the key to effective shell bearing retention is appropriate crush height in the bearing shell set, I would not recommend anything at the cap/block interface. I imagine that that thin band of RTV is long gone once the cap is seated and the bolts are tightened, but since there is nothing to be sealed at that split line, why risk anything that would potentially compromise the metal-to-metal contact needed to establish the shell bearing crush. 2. I don't know what that O ring's composition is on the liner, but I'd be tempted to use Dow #4 Silicone lubricant instead of a petroleum-based lubricant. I'm guessing that it's a silicone O ring, but it may also be Viton, which would make this point moot. 3. Have you considered using a chain fall between the fork and the head? That way you could use the fork positioning for the "rough" positioning of the head and then use the chain fall for the "fine" movement. Head gaskets are precision and clearly worth the $100 or so that they cost. ...But bark the surface while lowering the head, and it's compromised. ...Of course, if Cummins recommends the procedure used, who am I to question the OEM? ...And Allison, please don't wear rings while working with machinery unless they're the silicone variety. Bad enough to smash one's finger, but then to have to cut off the crushed ring.

Don't set them liners to high, you can blow the liner seat out of the block, I prefer to deck the block and cut the liners together so you don't use the shims, I know that means an out of frame rebuild, but I have a spare engine so that's how I roll

Torque + angle. I learned about this taking a Porsche M96 engine rebuild class from the preeminent M96 engine rebuilder in the world, Jake Raby. There is also a concept of torque to yield (TTY), which the angle tightening actually stretches the bolt. if it is a TTY bolt, it can only be used one time. The "head" bolts on the M96 are TTY. The paint pencil is a MUST when assembling an engine!
