Installing a Commercial TPO Membrane on a RV?

I was contacted by a viewer to help with a roofing issue, but unfortunately I was very busy. However, the crew at Cassone's RV was willing to help an owner in dire straights.
His 2003 Fleetwood Discovery had a rotten roof and the old membrane was removed by another business. Unfortunately, that business did not want to finish the job so the owner was left stranded. He wanted a commercial TPO roof on his unit like the guys at ‪@RVROOFINSTALL‬ does. He provided the materials and just needed assistance installing the membrane and he would take care of the rest.
This is a GAF roofing system I and the rest of the Cassone Crew has never done before, so obviously it was a learning experience for us too. Sta-bond 183 was used to replace the luan decking like a Winnebago roof. We did our best to follow the manufacturer's directions but I am positive we did not do it perfectly.
Thanks!

When you mentioned ‘down in Georgia how they do things’ I had to think. You’re talking the ‘rv roof install’ guys who also have a KZbin channel and do the seam welding etc. They’re amazing guys and do incredible work too. Not unlike yourself, Chad and Micah. Thanks James.

The real way to bond TPO is gluing the deck and the sheet. Roll it in once it's tacky. I see all these rvs fail because roofs are put on wrong, gluing only deck. Of coarse I am a commercial roofer of 25 years so have significant experience

Hi James, Thanks for your videos I live in Ga and after watching your instructions I acquired a 2000 30Q hurricane and did a complete redo, and installed the PVC roof I wanted the Commercial TPO but it was way out of my price range, With your instructions the PVC was a very doable job. they had the PVC membrane but no glue I asked them what was required to comply with the warranty and was told and sourced and completed thanks again

Great video James. Where you cut the wires was where I had my leak problem. It originally had foam that had dried out and turned to dust. I squirted silicon into it like the ones you removed. Still had a leak, so I foamed it again. No more leak so far. Best Wishes! Kevin

Thanks for showing us this. It would be great if the owner provides us some updates on how he finished the job. RV roofs do seem to be problematic and prone to failure and the industry should do something to improve the long term outlook. The commercial roof route seem to have some advantages over the RV roofs even if it's much harder to apply.

When I used to do laminate on cabinets, if it was a long run we would use pipes every so often to keep it from touching it until we laid it down I don’t know if that something you could try or think about next time.Pipes would be maybe a foot to a foot n half apart and then you would pull pipe out smooth that out to the next pipe then pull that pipe out.u get the idea. While on the topic of roof repair, I have got my own little project going on. I am repairing the edpm (auto correct inserted Rodman then Edomite in place of “edpm”. You gotta love the auto correct feature.) roof on my 23’ travel trailer. So, it has been a zen practice removing the flaking paint from the “Rodman” roof. I started with Dawn, water and stiff bristle brush to get the big patches. I am now down to a putty knife with a sharpened edge to coax some of the remainder. If it doesn’t come up willing, I leave it and move on. I will be applying Pro Guard Liquid Roof (primers and sealant). I have on occasion lost focus and nicked the roof down to the black (

I'm about to do the same to my coach. 60mil GAF TPO. I had already fabricated the curbs, used GAF detail membrane and heat welded all together. It's a VERY tedious and time consuming process! I made a few mistakes along the way and had to redo a few. That's expected when you're learning to do this but gets easier over time. Now I'm ready to install next week!

I’m not sure if this will get seen since this is an older video, but…Why isn’t marine grade plywood used in place of that crappy luan? I know cost & weight might be the first thoughts but wouldn’t that be a better option? Would there be a problem with the adhesive binding to the marine plywood or some sort of other waterproofing ? I’m just wondering after watching nearly all of your roof replacement videos…LoL! Great Information Channel for existing and new RV owners!

That seems like it would be a true monster of a roof once installed but the installation process itself, wow😳 Perhaps better suited as a factory option as a custom-ordered feature. I would pay extra for a roof like that... presuming the factory installs it correctly of course.

"Commercial grade TPO" is identified as 60mil or thicker by the WSRCA, NRCA, and by nearly every manufacturer since 2009. And that's 60 before you factor things like fleece thickness. The reason why is TPO naturally erodes, losing thickness every year. Especially those utilizing halogenated fire retardants as opposed to the more modern formulas which prefer magnesium.

RV Roof Install in Georgia are experts in installing commercial 60 mil TPO roofs with curbs. They showcase their work but it is not a DYI channel. Why laugh at people finding a KZbin Channel where roofs are installed? Maybe you could learn something from RV Roof Install. Try standing on the crap from Dicor or using their crappy products. It a lot thicker because it’s quality and will last a lot longer than typical RV roofs.

If the roll is that incredibly heavy, should there be concern about the added weight to the overall weight, against it's limits? Did you advise the customer on its limitations? Does anyone else have comments on this? It seems like the greatest weak spots are the edges, and UV resistance, rather than roofing material thickness, provided no one is going to have to be up there, walking around and working on a recurring basis.

I am not much of a fan of RVIA they make you pay for "the decal" when you purchase most RVs. You do not get anything for it but support their organization. I am sure other professional organizations would love to automatically get paid from the buyer/client to support them.

As a roofer myself, tpo is actually garbage. I wouldn't install it on a residential or commercial buildings. Yeah they're ok on RVs, I'm installing it on my travel trailer replacing some dry rot. But if you're installing tpo on your RV, then I'd recommend coating your camper roof with GE silicone on the wood, then lay the TPO (creates great adhesion and no moist can seap under it), fasten it with screws, then coat the entire tpo 2-3 times using the GE silicone roofing coating. It will get pricey but you're roof will last a loooong time. The GE silicone is UV resistant, stays elastic all its life which is great when traveling and all that movement on your roof. Also great when it gets hot/cold when your roof is breathing expanding and contrapting due it being elastic. Just leaving your tpo under the sun, the sun will cook it due tpo being plastic and not UV resistant.

Wow! Very eye opening. Note to self, if you buy a “rubber roof” Rv sell it in before the roof goes bad! Is the very “thin fiberglass” covering one piece fiberglass roofs much better?

I had the same idea of using a material designed for building construction with a 30 plus year life span rather than the cheap crap they put on RVs in the factory.

Question: I designed and built a DIY small pull behind camper, and I am near completion on the inside and it's currently inside a shop. I used wood sheeting top and sides. What would you recommend me to use for the roof and the sides to make it waterproof and will last several years.

I would use a fiberglass on it Jon. You can get it in rolls just like what they use on the side walls of these new high end class As and you can get a roll up to 45’ long. It would be a great product to use on the top and sides of your tiny camper since it’s good enough for $3 million dollar coaches. I’ve seen it available thru RecPro and a few other RV parts suppliers so just look around. Good luck on whatever you choose to use tho and keep me up to date on how it goes. I’d love to build one myself after I get done with my MCI remodel

I have a Winnebago vista 33T and on each side of the RV roof it’s like an air bubble all the way down from back to forward, up in front I have two air bubbles going all the way across from the left to the right of the RV, I could use some suggestions on what to do should I take it to camping world for an estimate or can I talk to you personally

@@AZExpert thank you for reply, I thought that’s what you would say, I couldn’t get to you anyway and I will be asking a local RV repair, but I was only hoping for advice, you see on my 2008 Winnebago Vista 33T has two or three bubbles from driver side to the passenger side about six feet long, also down the left and rights of the RV I can push down on the crown showing that the roof isn’t glued down fully. The RV doesn’t leak except the front AC only, I was told to leave the bubbles along because they could flattened down. I have been watching many of your roofing repair videos and have learn a lot, I have even saved 8 of your roof video s that correspond to my roof problem. Again I appreciate you responding to my email, if it’s possible I would like to send three or four pictures to you, I understand you’re not taking any more jobs because you’re very busy man, I suppose what I’m really after is what is my my situation, can I drive this RV down the road or will the roof fly off, and what is the normal price of a total repair job for a roof replacement. Again I appreciate you and enjoy your show it’s very knowledgeable and I’ve learned a lot from you, I’ve learned so much that I’m almost positive that the roof needs to be replaced so again like I said I’ll be looking for a local repair man, thank you very much.
