In order to get more students into university the schools made a business decision in the 60’s and 70’s. Previously the emphasis was on studying subjects such as engineering, medicine, law, history, philosophy and languages. To grow the student body they expanded the subject matter to include cultural issues such as gender studies, african-american studies, women’s studies, communications, film studies and sports education. This resulted was a cultural shift in academics. Previously you had to be reasonably intelligent to get into college and graduate, with the shift that is no longer the case.
