The University of Gnawa: that’s exactly what it is. A university, a place where people can gather from far and wide - Morocco, Senegal, France, West Africa - and learn, share ideas, make music and friends. The spirit is anchored in the joy and ecstasy of Gnawa, its African pride and groove. But that spirit is open to all-comers, especially the sounds and traditions of West Africa, where gnawa has its roots. It’s an ancestral trans-oceanic conversation, like the one between Ireland and North America, or Nigeria and Cuba, except that in this case the ocean is made of sand, and it’s called the Sahara.
Where once the journey across was laden with pain and suffering, now, in musical form, it has become frictionless and free. Like the wind.
