Thanks a bunch! You helped me breathe life into my Xbox rev 1.0 Thomson dvd drive long enough to softmod it!

Thanks for being exact with it, I went off a pot tweak video last week where he was like “you’re gonna want it at about 3 yeah just around 3” no units or showing the multimeter setting or anything what a moron
@AzNstat2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It was what I was aiming for. I noticed the vague tutorials others have shown without actually showing the units needed which doesn't help atall. Glad this video has helped you. 😊

They made good drives

I primarily use an air compressor for removing dust followed by window cleaner to the laser, but this Thompson still wasn't performing well after the standard cleaning. So this time I used canned air and stuck the nozzle behind the mirror, where the laser and under side of the eye are Very carefully and then gave it a good spray. It went from barely being able to play Halo/sometimes not, to playing it absolutely fine. It still struggled with more scratched CDs, so I adjusted my potentiometer from 1.195 to 1.075. Seems to be happy now. KEEP IN MIND each potentiometers adjustment is unique. I increased mine by 10% of its original value. I have seen Thompsons range from 0.9 ohms to 1.7 factory default, so they can vary wildly. Ontop of that, I greased the plastic with white lithium grease, cleaned the lasers guides with IPA then relubed with synthetic engine oil cus all I had.

Yeah man, mine was actually at 0.7 from factory

@@Pequod-yv1iv I've gone down a rabbit hole with this subject. Begun recapping DVD drives. Has proven VERY effective for me. The capacitors essentially turn into resistors and reduce the overall current downstream. I've got about 6 threads regarding this on Reddit.

@@nuckenfutz9983 I am looking for it now. recapping DVD drive.. is that hard ??
@nuckenfutz99838 ай бұрын
@@overdriver99 Depends on the DVD drive. There's 6 different models, and some are easier than others. Basic to intermediate soldering skills will suffice. Make sure you practice on electronics which you don't intend on saving until you have quality, repeatable work. Additionally, I've had 3 people recap drives without success. These drives showed absolutely zero ability to read a disc. Wouldn't **ever** launch disc, or even identify one was ever present. If your drive shows zero ability to read anything - I wouldn't suggest recapping. However if your drive **can** identify media at times, but simply does a poor job - I most definitely would recommend recapping. Measure your potentiometers original position and adjust if needed once recapped.

Mine could barely read music CD's and no games at all. Opened the top of the drive and let the dvd tray out, i didnt even remove the drive from the console lol. Used Q-tips with nail polish remover (acetone) to remove the glue, i noticed you have to clean and clean to get the glue inside the switch out. Used the tip of the multimeter to rotate the pot and adjusted it around 1.25k ohms, it started reading discs and loads reasonably fast, but it sounds funny so it might not last for long. Hope it last long enough to do the softmod, after that i dont need the drive
@NuffMan_ Жыл бұрын
If anybody attemps the same i would recommend to solvent the glue for atleast 5mins before trying to turn the screw, it felt like its really easy to torn out of the pcb if turned like i did

There's no spare laser to buy like for PS2s or PS3s?
@37Kilo29 ай бұрын
The issue with this is that it just wears out the laser faster. I've been replacing the resistor arrays on the board to get the drives up and going. Never needed to change the pot.

Yes....great video. Thanks for this! I'm trying to fix mine but think I made it worse. So....you are putting the Multimeter on each side of the screw that you make the adjustments too?
@AzNstat3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. You should only do this with very minimal adjustments. Try not to over do it or it could fry your laser. I place the prongs where the solder joints are by the pot. One either side should give you a reading. It's quite tricky to do.

Great video. I tried it on my Samsung drive some time ago that took a long time trying to read before giving up and saying it couldn't. I made it slightly worse since I had no experience with pot tweaking, but I know how very fragile it is so I did tweak it with very minimal movements. After seeing this I'm going to try it again. I assume the numbers you want are the same between all drive brands? Thanks!
@AzNstat2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes you can only do this a number of times before the laser is fried and will not give a reading. So be careful. This reading is for this particular drive. Some other models may differ as they output different voltages etc

I just recently refurbished my 1.0 xbox and the games read and load much faster compared to before the refurb but certain disks just will not read at all and i get the "your disk may be dirty or damaged" error even though there are barely any scratches on the disk and if there are any they are not super deep ones. I havent modified the laser in any way aside from cleaning it with 91% isopropl alcohol and a non lint leaving q tip. I dont know what the problem could be. When the xbox is on and starts to read a game the laser sounds like its making clicking and chirping sounds.
