Right as you took that meat out of that first barnacle I thought to myself, "man, that definitely looks exactly like Maine lobster's rib meat; which by far is my most favorite part of the lobster(and unfortunately most scarce) because of how tender and succulent the meat is comparatively(feel free to call me super picky) to something like the tail meat which everyone seems to rant and rave about when ordering lobster. For me, it's all about chewing the little legs from the claw straight back to the last connected joint, the rib meat, the big claws but no thanks on the actual claw(pincher) parts and more like what would be the equivalent of the human palm, wrist, forearm area. Sure I'd eat the tail on most occasions no problem, but when in comparison to the parts I just pointed out; The soft, succulent, tasty and lastly euphoric sensation that you get from the medium/soft meaty parts of a Maine lobster after dousing them in butter is hard to argue with!!

I knew about the pirate punishment of keelhauling I had never thought of what the barnacles would do.. interesting info I found.. While keelhauling is often associated with pirates, it was more commonly used by the navy. Navy sailors were essentially viewed as property, and the captain of the ship held powers of life and death over them. Severe discipline on ships was supposed to prevent theft and mutiny , although it often had the opposite effect. Sailors were sometimes kidnapped and forced to serve on board naval ships, where severe punishment served as the only motivation to work.

Each Lapas should have some of that nice garlic butter in it when you slurp it down. Never dry like I saw a few times. Takes the dish from an average of 7.2 to an average of 8.9 with the proper butter placement. My family is from Madeira Island. You should give Madeira a go one of these days!
