Tlaltecuhtli, the Great Caiman, would become the Earth and the sky, or Earth Mother. When attempting to catch Tlaltecuhtli, she bite off the foot of Tezcatlipoca, The Lord of Night, and that is why he is depicted with one foot as a smoking mirror. Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl eventually transformed themselves into large serpents and captured Tlaltecuhtli and tore her in half. Half would become the sky and the other half the Earth. The Ometeotl seeing the suffering of Tlaltecuhtli sacrificed his own blood and allowed the fruits of the Earth to grow from her body. From her hair sprang the trees and the bushes. From her skin grew the delicate grasses and flowers. From her eyes springs, wells and caves. From her nose rose the mountains and from her mouth the great rivers flowed. For her sacrifice the new Earth cried out to be fed human blood.

You're mixing Tlaltecuhtli with Cipactli
@user-ln7jw2qn6h3 жыл бұрын
@@Ivan-Manzo Cipactli is often called Tlaltecuhtli and referred to as the "Earth Monster" There is no set story, and much was lost in translation.

I saw somewhere that they fought with this monster and that his dead body formed the earth

what are the speakers sources?
@wuthaphuk27005 жыл бұрын
what about native sources!?
@Ivan-Manzo3 жыл бұрын
There aren't any direct sources from natives in this particular case, at least not in writing as we undertand it, but rather in a pictographic forman in some codices but they don't say much regarding her story, not to mention that there are no surviving prehispanic Mexica (Aztec) codices, but rather they belong to other regions like Oaxaca or the Mayan area. Also early novohispano writers got their material from indigenous people born before the arrival of the spaniards, so while they're not direct sources they don't tend to lie much, not to mention that is somewhat easy to weed out the lies by comparing different writers and seeing what they each wrote in common regarding a subject.
