Hiya Lou. I remember my older brother building the Ratfink & Motorbike model waaaay back when I was around 8 or 9. (63 now & he's 72) 😆

Oh. My. God! Watching you build this kit has unleashed a flood of memories from my childhood. Im a California boomer kid and grew up in that entire Rat Fink, Ed " big daddy" Roth culture. I don't know for sure, but i think much of this was more of a west coast hot rodder, surfer thing but those years ( late 50's to mid 60's) were the best times of my life. Thank you for the time trip! I built so many of those kits and we didn't have model shops; we had toy stores with model sections! Not to mention the car kits! Anyhoo, thanks for the trip back!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Great looking Rat Fink! It brings back memories from when I built some crazy car kits when I was growing up. I can remember building some of those kits but left them unpainted because I didn't have paint. Still, it was fun and I thought they looked pretty good. :)

AWESOME! Great job. Thx for sharing. I have fond memories of a Rat Fink model kit I built as a kid in the 60s. Model is "gone", but still have pix of me proudly showing it off :)

Great build! When I was young, I had a RF tee shirt with him on an exaggerated VW Beetle. Of course, this went with my ‘73 Beetle which was modified! Oh, the old days and simpler times!

I met one of the Fink’s characters IRL. I got the Camaro back from Chevy. They “fixed” the 8-speed automatics torque converter. Some testing was in order. North bound on my local commuter 6 lane. Just as I hit max Q, something moved in the rear view. No, not a black and white. Just white. 30 or 40 feet of full up RAM dually pushing my 6 hard. I spared a second peak since everything else around me was literally at relative rest. There behind the wheel was a set of bulging eyes crunched between mountainous hulk-like shoulders. Ham fists so big that 10 and 2 was more like half an hour on both sides. All that topped off with a comically canted “Mack” gimme hat. Cletus there was gonna best that Chevy if his belching black pipes single handedly melted the Ant Arctic. I waved 3 fingers shy of a whole hand, grabbed 5th and embarrassed him. He was still trying to make 130 when I rolled off at my exit. He should have been on the front of a kit box for sure. By god he hit all the marks except the shifter in hand. Maybe he found a Mustang to best before his road rage wore off. I’ll never know.

I had a bunch of Rat Fink stuff when I was a kid. They were in bubble gum machines everywhere! Little figures, rings, charms, etc. So, I have a certain fond attachment to this ugly character. Great build, Lou!

RAT FINK FOREVER! Wow, take me back to the 60s willya! You made the right decision on those yellow spots. I always saw them as pimples, not warts. Roth was all about the gross-out and zits are grosser than warts. ;>) Ever build the infamous AMT Amtronic, the one everyone and their dog turned into a Trek-style shuttle? Not even close to Ed Roth but still SF-flavored out of the box.

great job Lou. Not having a 3D printer I would love to see a video on how you go from a picture to a 3D model of the same picture. Maybe you could do a video on that one day.

Hi Lou. Not a character I am familiar with (I don't think it crossed "the pond") but I can certainly appreciate the work you put into this kit. Most impressive bit for me was the hand painted pinstripes round the lettering - when you first mentioned thinking about it I immediately thought "don't have too much coffee!" As always you did a masterful job. You can get a degree in cartooning?! Mine is boring old single honours Computing Science. I have however noted that you are left handed and creative whereas I am right handed and technical. This may explain why I am much better at spaceships and paint masks than organic characters and hand painting. Having said that I have ordered some D&D style miniatures to practice my figure skills. As always looking forward to next week 👍

I wish I could find the Surfer Girl kit from back then. At least I think I do. I had fun putting her together to make her a lot more oddball.

I've never been a big fan of the grotesques. Even as a kid; I know... a serious little jerk, right? I think it more that I grew up in midtown Manhattan where cars were the enemy. Rats too, for that matter. But I can certainly appreciate the fine and thoughtful paint job. Plus a good 3D sculpt. Too bad you didn't have your first takes on the mascot. What was selected was nice enough, hit all the right notes.

Lou, I went to Kings Hobby's here in Austin yesterday. Got some cool stuff. Passed on 2 mint NCC-1701 A AMT kits. He wants $200 a piece. They look complete. I told Interstellar Modler as well. Please, please someone buy them! It would be way too easy for me to go spend 4 bills for something I am not likely to build.

Hi Lou I would like to tell you about the Rat Fink of the mid “60s” the rat had triangle shape ears and a long pointy nose. He came in bubble gum capsules from a gum machine.

Were those licensed or knockoffs? That was very common back then.
