If you think about it, after Zuko left that letter for Mai, it was most definitely Ty Lee comforting her over the heartbreak. Ty Lee knows how important Zuko is to her and was not only sad for herself as they spent their childhood together, but also for Mai. Mai was foreshadowed to rebel when she did previously in The Drill episode. When she wouldn't get in the muddy water Mai said to Ty Lee, "She [Azula] can shoot all the lightning she wants at me, I'm not going into that."

The betrayal has been foreshadowed. Ty Lee praised Azula so she won’t witness Azula’s bad side towards her. Mai stood in the background and pretend she doesn’t care so it’s not fun for Azula to torment her. Fear is not the most reliable way to lead people. Once people find stronger feelings than their fear, then they’re going to rebel. Mai is the MVP in this episode because thanks to her, Ty Lee took Azula down and Mai saved the people in the gondola. Mai was ready and prepared to go toe-to-toe with Azula.

I think Ty Lee just like Mai knew Azula wasn’t the best person to be around. But they had some connection with her as kids being friends even though Azula was the bully. And I think Ty Lee is very submissive and sometimes too kind to Azula when she didn’t deserve it. Mai ultimately feared her for a time being but still didn’t care and did what she wanted. I’m surprised she stayed with her this long perhaps to protect Ty Lee since they seemed closer. Sry for rant

Heroic. I love this episode so much for Mai & Ty Lee. They deserve this moment and it was done just right. The punch hits so hard because it is unexpected in this episode: a 2-parter focused on Zuko & Sokka. And we hadn't seen the girls for a while. Plus Zuko's change was something they'd built up visibly for forever. Mai & Ty Lee's was slow-cooked, to perfection. Kudos to this show for rounding out even more minor characters.

The whole reason the past Firelords set the marriage between The Avatar’s and the Firelord blood line WAS to create benders like Azula and it worked. They wanted to create the most powerful! She’s the true Firebending prodigy and and was basically born that way. I mean she’s the Firebender in the intro of the show. Also, the non benders are exceptional and can take on master benders as well. They highlight every person, not just benders in this show which is why it’s THEE GOAT

Ty Lee betraying Azula was always one of my most favourite scenes. I see it not as betrayal but as finally leaving the toxic relationship they had. If we look at that from betrayal perspective, Azula also betrayed Ty Lee (probably even multiple times) by being a bad friend. I mean, when she wanted Ty Lee to help her, but Ty Lee said that she’s happy with what she’s doing, instead of respecting her decision or being happy for her, Azula literally threatened her to do what she wants. And I’m sure stuff like that happened quite a lot Ty Lee was friends with Azula since childhood, so it would be quite difficult for her to fully understand how wrong she is. So I’m proud of her for finally doing the right thing

I love that we can really see how much Zuko has grown in this episode. In the past, whenever he fought Azula he was quickly overwhelmed by her, and she frequently used his anger against him. But after learning from the dragons and joining Aang, we can see how much calmer he is, he was matching her pretty evenly and countering every blow 😊

- Azula's most defining feature is control of both herself and everyone around her, which was beautifully displayed on how she handled the Dai Lee and the Earth King situation. Even in her introduction where she was practicing lighting on that ship in B2E01 that even a single hair out of place was totally unacceptable. Now she just had one of her closest companions betray her seemingly entirely out of nowhere, then immediately betrayed again by the other. This is probably the first time we see her genuinely lose her composure and emotionally lash out. It's going to be interesting for sure !!!!

Mai and Ty Lee always followed Azula out of fear. Sometimes people don't realize it, but even their friendship was abusive. Can you imagine forcing someone to hunt their own boyfriend? There was no way that Mai was going to let Zuko die. And there was also no way that Ty Lee was going to let her friend die. Fear can only push people so far. Push them too far, and they find the strength to fight against you, because they've got nothing to lose.

So if Sokka had not decidedto go to the boiling rock, this confrontattion between Azula Mai and ty lee would not have happend and Azula would still have had her team. Sokka's choice to go the boiling rock had very large scale consequences it seems.

This was definitely an OHHH MYY GOOOOODDDSSS moment for me as a child. I know it took a lot for Ty Lee and Mai to finally stand up and leave Azula (Ty Lee esp. I was shocked when that spine of hers showed up to attack Azula). This was pivotal in affecting how Azula operates from here. And the finesse of everything else? Maaann, pretty much all ATLA eps are great, but I love reactions to this one especially, before it REALLY kicks off. :)

Excellent reaction guys. These are the moments this series does so well. Right when you forget that there are no flavor of the week villains, they’re all humans with their own issues and motivations, they blindside you with just how human they really are One of my favorite parts of this arc is how they actually saved the guy who helped them. He almost crashed the whole plan, brought his lady and the homie, and even got captured, but when it came down to it, he didn’t snitch, and Sokka rewarded that loyalty with his own. A few things that happened along the whole series but were shown clearly in this 2 Parter: - Zuko's fightning style. Its just special. Aside the "break dancing" style, Zuko almost always aims for his oppenents feet. in Episode 3 of Book 1 Uncle told him to always go for the root when he had his Agni Kai against Admiral Zhao. And this particular technique he never negleted. You can see in every single fight, Zuko mostly goes for the enemies roots. Even in the "fake" fight to get imprisoned to the cooler he aimed at his "opponents" feet. - Azula is getting stronger every time we see her. To the point she is able to fly. But you could see, that she realy had to channel herself for this. You were asking why Ty Lee was sad after they left the Gondula. Well, they left 6 people to die. And I mean realy die. You have to keep in mind that Zuko was a childhood friend sort of. And even after his arriving back to the fire nation, they all (Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko) bonded together (The Beach Episode). Azula didnt even blink. Thats when Ty Lee probably noticed, that she goes way too far with her brutality. And even going for Mai, thats when she had to act.

"Because I'm a people person." Azula manipulation at its finest. She wants to come across as someone who knows things based on pure instinct, like she can just read people like a book, but Azula knows crucial information to base her judgement (that they've got the wrong guy) on: 1. Azula knows Zuko joined the gAang. 2. Azula knows Zuko is at this prison, through Mai, who in turn knows through her uncle. 3. Azula would have heard how Zuko was caught, and correctly guesses he's not alone in his action, there is at least one other of his new friends here with him. 4. Azula knows who the gAang consists of, and who their closest allies are. 5. Azula know this man is not in any way connected with the gAang or their allies. She could have taken the time to explain all of this, and it would have made perfect sense to the warden and to anybody else listening, but instead she goes with a smug "because I'm a people person," and knows they will take that with them always. Edit to add: I'm also very much sure that Azula isn't dumb enough to consider, even for a millisecond, that there was just a coincidental mass escape attempt going on at the same time Zuko and at least one or more of his friends were there. She knew full well they were connected to the whole thing.

My favorite two parter so far. Not that the other candidates were bad or anything. But this one I like the most, because of the unique, secluded setting, the character development, the fighting scenes and the hype and ecstasy it creates so close to the finally. Your reaction was awesome as always!

Once again, you'd expect Azula would have Mai and Ty Lee killed. It's what would happen in real life and is more in keeping with Azula's character. Despite how realistic it is, everyone would absolutely hate it. I mean Ozai would probably have Iroh killed after he was captured but that would traumatize every avatar fan.

I cannot wait for y’all to get to the finale! You’re going to have a hard time editing it because it’s nonstop amazing. How you felt when you saw Azula “fly,” that’s what the finale is like. Also, just a random thing to point out. Since Zuko learned the true meaning of firebending, he doesn’t grunt with every punch anymore. Before the dragons taught him, every single fire punch he used was paired with an angry grunt. Now, he doesn’t do it. Such a cool small detail.

I just watched this episode last night and thought of something interesting. Another one of those, , I’m not sure this is intentional or not things, but if it was; it’s incredible writing lol Remember in Zuko Alone, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are out playing together in the gardens? you can see Azula and Ty Lee doing gymnastics. When Azula does a cartwheel and then tries rounding off into a back handspring, she doesn’t quite stick the landing. Then when Ty Lee executes it perfectly, Azula real quick gets up and shoves her from behind to make her fall down. “Azula!” (Which, is the first and only time she demonstrates that she’s jealous of Ty Lee before The Beach episode I believe) Then she turns around and immediately plays that trick on Mai and Zuko. Firebends AT HER FRIENDS HEAD by the fountains to scare and humiliate them both knowing Zuko would probably bowl her over trying to help her and they’ll fall into the water. Mai gets up and is clearly mad at the two of them but doesn’t confront Azula for doing that shitty thing to her. Just mutters, “you guys are just.. UGH” and left the situation Kinda cool that this time, Mai VERY openly told Azula EXACTLY what she thinks about her and where she could go, in front of everyone. Then when Azula makes to firebend at Mai’s head, just like the apple from when they were kids, but REALLY trying to do damage this time Just like that shove from behind, Ty Lee pops up from HER blind spot, and knocks her down. In front of everyone. Now it’s Azula who’s on the ground. Not only betrayed by her friends. But humiliated. In front of 👏🏼EVERY 👏🏼ONE 👏🏼 THERE

Azula cannot sustain powered flight. She can boost herself up or use it for acceleration, but it would be just to exhausting to hover and fly for longer period of time just by firebending..

The betrayal of Azula was such a long time coming, but it hits so powerfully when it finally does. "I love Zuko more than I fear you," Mai is a BAMF. And then Ty Lee saving Mai from Azula, we can assume that she cares more for Mai than she does for Azula. Mai and Ty Lee are better friends than either of them are with Azula, she's just what brought them all back together again. I love it, and this is the moment the decline of Azula's mental state begins.
