Hair in the fire nation is symbolic of honor. And topknots are the most honor-symbolic parts of fire nation hairstyles. When he was a kid, Zuko still had his topknot, but he grew out the rest of his hair as well. After the regaining of his honor became his sole purpose, he cut off everything except the topknot, essentially saying that honor was the only thing left in his life. Later, when he and Iroh cut off their topknots, it symbolizes not only their irredeemable loss of honor in the eyes of the fire nation, but their ostracism from the fire nation as a whole. Also, the topknot serves a purpose in the first season, before we get to know much about Zuko. It makes him stand out and adds to his striking, unusual appearance, while maintaining his similarity to other fire nation royals.

I don't really blame Azula for the way she turned out, I mean look at who she spent the most time around, her father Ozai and her grandfather Azulon, two persons who were legit more evil that Azula. Both Zuko and Azula are messed up, but Azula moreso. When you look at their childhood, their parents both favoured a child over the other, for their mother was Zuko and for Ozai *AND* Azulon, was Azula. She was a firebending prodigy that got recognized by her father and grandfather for her mastery in firebending and her ruthlessness, but she never really got love from both parents. Even though she spent most of her time around her father, he was anything but loving and caring and her mother was genuinely concerned for how crazy her daughter was. Meanwhile Zuko spent most of his time around his mother who was kind and caring. Also Azula is 14 in the series.

Uhm bro, they've literally just started with the Redemption Arc of Azula in the comics and they had already some plans like that for a theoretical Book 4. Hell they've somehow even redeemed Kuvira(aka Metalbending Hitler), so Ozai is really the only purely irredeemable villain in Avatar.

@@paige8453 Yeah no(people really need to stop with all this pseudo-psychology from the 19th century), Azula is pretty much just the hardcore version of Zuko(and he would've in fact most likely gone full psycho much earlier as the "golden child", the biggest difference between them is actually how long Azula could work as a pretty much highly functional sociopath + human-weapon) and still a teen, it would just take longer + lead to a less wholesome result than in his case(at least if they do it right instead of like with Kuvira, who was far more irredemable but somehow became a buddy in no time XD).
