For those that are worried about no blue flames, I feel like as she gets more and more off the hook her flames will get hotter thus making them blue. In literally the first training scene where she looses her cool and attacks her trainer her flames turn blue for a millisecond if you catch it

Yeah, but we don’t see that until after Zuko leaves the fire nation in book 3, and all we’ve seen in this Netflix season is before we ever met Azula, from a much younger actress than the voice actress, who was about 30 when recording the show, and did a very cartoonish, over the top, unrealistic voice for Azula, which no ordinary people have in real life. And I loved all the Azula scenes we got here, her being jealous at Zuko, despite her being better than him, but being stuck at the palace, her helping Zhao the whole time, and her lightning bending for the first time, which is what Ozai wanted, to push her into training day and night, until she could do that, and then she was ready to be given a mission.

It's fascinating seeing Ozai playing the same mind games with her that she uses to manipulate others. That apple certainly didn't fall far from the tree. Honestly in that household it's a wonder anyone was able to break the cycle of violence.

Exactly and the thing is, Azula was introduced as she was and I loved her from the get go, now seeing her motivations just gives her even more depth in a way, don't get me wrong original Azula had plenty of depth but seeing that even her, the perfect prodigy, had to work her but off to be taken seriously gives a whole new perspective to the character that is possibly my favourite character in the original series since I was a child

@@JohnDoe-il4dz Because they tend to be more interesting than heroes, it's just fiction man, they don't harm anyone, so it's normal that we like more interesting characters that aren't typical protagonists, since I'm the good guy and I do good things all the time, I like them. sacrifice for humanity and stuff, villains have more personality and authors can give them more realistic personalities, although this is not always the case, I mean, look at Thanos from the MCU or Arthas from Warcraft 3 (WoW doesn't count).

Afterwards it depends on their personality and thoughts, or sympathy, although some only like them for being sexy or cool, whether they are men or women. An example would be Dr. Frieza from Batman, he is only a villain because he only wants to revive his wife, no matter the cost and that is the quickest way. Azula, for example, is sexy, cool, and you sympathize with her since she was raised by a guy who wanted the best heir, so he made them grow up in a hyper-competitive environment with her brother, plus their mother only paid attention to Zuko. Or you can just be Mrs. Dimitrescu and be an elegant and mega sexy 3 meter tall MILF.

Of all the changes the live action show made, giving Azula a role in book 1 was definitely the best. Think about it, Azula is not a person who can just Be. She can take on several people, master fire bending, lead armies, manipulate her loved ones… But she can never just _be a girl_ . There’s NO WAY Azula would spend an entire season not scheming or plotting, so this arc actually makes perfect sense for Azula.

So the good thing about Azula in Netflix show is that she is being shown as a master tactician which she is. She’s better than Zuko at that. Also she generated the lightning and that’s a huge win for show. She and Iroh are the only ones along with Ozai who can do this. But what the show has messed up is 1- Azula’s blue flames are missing. Her blue flames are not because she has hotter fire or because she gets madder etc. What 99% fans are forgetting is Ozai’s wife (Zuko and Azula’s mom) was Avatar Roku’s granddaughter. So Azula is the perfect union between Royal bloodline and the Avatar bloodline- this is why her fire is blue and stronger than Zuko, Ozai and even Iroh’s. 2-Azula never becomes psychotic until Zuko comes into same frame with her either directly or is mentioned. She is otherwise a very controlled but highly volatile person.

They're more defiant to Ozai, who in the animated series didn't have any serious backlash, and was able to manipulate them flawlessly. Here, both of them fight back against him. It's possible they either give her a redemption arc or make her take over as the main villain halfway through the series, but at the same time it does give Ozai moments to showcase his own personality. I did notice that Ozai was proud more than angry at Azula when she suggested he unleash her to let her hunt down Zuko, and even when she used lightning.

The original Azula has pretty much the same sob story as Zuko. The only difference between them is Ozai ignored Zuko until the day he burnt Zuko's face. It's only shown towards the end of book 3 in the og, so it's good they want to show her descent into madness. Book 2 is where you really get to see Azula in action.

I COMPLETELY disagree with the people hating on this version of Azula. First of all, the show is an ADAPTATION not a remake. The goal was never to zap the animated show with the live-action ray like Disney does. This version of ATLA wants to make the characters feel alive in a literal way by using real-life actors. With that in mind, of course this Azula isn't as cold and intimidating as her animated counterpart. Why? Well, she's a literal child. Children are easily swayed by their emotions and are prone to being insecure. It's great that the writers are giving Azula more depth and are obviously setting things up to build her into the cold perfect commander that she was in the animated show to break her down in the future. This Azula is more human, which fits the show more.

The adaptation was simply more humanized, like Ozai for instance actually shows a twisted way of caring for both his children by making them stronger. Ozai on the show didn’t care whatsoever and was a simply evil conqueror without any source of redeemable qualities nor any sense as to way he was like that. Anime portrays hyperboles and exaggerations, an adaptation needs to follow the blueprint but bring more dimension, connectivity and a bit of realism. Azula has been crazy since she was a kid yes but they are right is saying animated Azula would not have dared to shoot lightning at Ozai. We hardly saw much interaction between them one on one, even in the flashbacks. In the end, when we actually see Azula upset with Ozai for not taking her with him during the arrival of the comet, she throws a temper tantrum like a child. When Ozai raises his voice at her, she quiets herself. Netflix Azula looked like she would fight Ozai If she had to. You can see the desperation within her. She'd do anything to prove herself worthy, even standing up against her own father with action, not just words.

Some of you guys have to realise this is Azula BEFORE book 2 which is where she was originally supposed to make her first appearance and not book 1, so obviously she wouldn't be unhinged from the get go. This season just tries to portray how she became the way she was in book 2.

That's ridiculous. The span of Book 1 is at best a few months, enough to change a person sure but far from enough to completely change her personality without enduring some super extreme experience. In the animated series we see that she's the same way even as a child. In fact, it's the reason why she eventually became unhinged in book 3; her mother thinking of her as a monster which haunted her after her only two "friends" betrayed her. Besides, Azula was confident, arrogant, intelligent, sharp, calculating etc. A born ruler without a hint of hesitation or uncertainty. She is not unhinged until part 2 of Book 3. Zuko was branded with fire and banished from the fire nation, sent on an impossible mission. Azula was the golden child, a prodigy and Ozai's favourite. She needed to prove nothing and already had his full approval, has been since they were children. I believe Zuko said that Ozai had told him that he was lucky to be born, whereas Azula was born lucky; a clear display of favoritism. Anyways, you don't banish someone, send them on an impossible mission and brand them with a permanent scar in their face if you had any intentions or hopes of having him return as a worthy heir. Only when Azula lied so that he had the 'glory' of not only slaying the Avatar, but also helping Azula conquer Ba Sing Sei, did he force Ozai to acknowledge him. There's absolutely no reason why Azula should feel jealous or inferior to Zuko. The real Azula would not become so emotional, it goes completely against her animated character, not even close. She has been looking down on Zuko since they were children, even emotionally manipulating him with ease. A psychopathic or sociopathic Azula would probably look at him as a toy to play with when she's bored. Azula is way too narcissistic to care in the slightest about Zuko, and we see this in Book 3 when she helped bring him back to the fire nation as the crown prince. Everything is more or less under her control, that's the impression that she gives until she becomes unstable in B3P2, anything less is a complete disgrace to her character.

What I am saying is that it is ridiculous to think that Azula's entire personality could change between Book 1 and Book 2, which is supposed to only be a few months at best. Especially when in the animation we have seen that her narcissistic and arrogant personality has been like this from when they were still children, and this is relevant because it is directly related to her becoming unhinged in Part 2 of Book 3. I agree with the bad writing part but I thought their approach to her character made some sense. I mean they are rushing some scenes and so I thought for their adaptation they would probably show different aspects of her while growing up and isn't portrayed as strongly as the og Azula was in the beginning since they are changing quite a number of things. For those not impressed with Azula’s character.. consider that in the original season 1 she didn’t even have any screen time until the final scene.. so I think it’s a great step up and a development/advancement of the Avatar universe to begin her story in this season 1. I would hope as fans we can appreciate and come to love the strengthening to the avatar universe this show is offering. I have faith that Azula, in the next seasons, will compound her rage and skills to be like the azula we know. I am hopeful and have enjoyed her so far

I love they actually gave her more of a back story. As much as I love the OG, her snap did come out of no where more in the third season. I love that she snapped, but with the og, we don’t get that much focus on it coming till season 3: The Beach( and a little in The Storm) I love that they are showing part of her motivations in season 1 of the LA. She’s not just nasty from a young age to be nasty. She wanted her parents praise and admiration. She wanted her father’s approval that she is worthy. She worked hard to be a perfectionist and calculated to prove she was better then her older brother.
