When you say more resistance do you mean that it will be easier to play a note without cracking or does it mean by adding resistance it makes it harder to play but gives you more tone colors, better dynamics and possibilities that you can further explore? I'm still wrapping my head around this terminology.

Great review. I’m pretty uneducated when it comes to different cuts and effects of different metals. It’s been over 10 years since I tried any different flute. What’s a Z cut? I really loved the quality of the whole range on this one! Sometimes I feel like the high top register can sound a bit forced but this sounded really open with a nice broad sound across the whole thing. And that price is a steal by the sounds of it! Top notch.

Also, was just chatting to mum my about the resistance of the gold. I used to learn from Alexa Still before she went overseas and she said that my (current) headjoint was too resistant because of the gold so mum bought me a new headjoint which was solid silver. It was unfortunately stolen so I am now back with the gold lip but not finding it to be problematic. I’m so inspired to see how different headjoints would sound now though 😂

So the Z cut is just a type of cut in the headjoint that Azumi does. All makers have different names for their cuts. Some are more circular/oval/square which changes the way the flute performs. Kind of confusing I know! I'm so sorry that your flute got stolen! Thanks for the video, Gina. I'm an adult learner, it's been almost 20 years now!!! So maybe not a learner any more...but I need to upgrade my flute since my current student flute has its limitations. Would you recommend this flute (I'd probably look for a used one due to budget)? Or should I just look into a new Yamaha intermediate B-foot flute?

Is this flute good for someone with small hands/short fingers; not a child. How is the pinkie finger reach on your right hand, from the D key (and how high is the pinkie in relation to the E key) and the reach to the keys for low Dflat, C and the Bflat?

I already have this flute with the normal sliver head joint but I would really be interested in upgrading my head joint but I can’t seem to find the head joint by itself :/

@Jayan Fernandes Resistance really means how much air it takes to get a good sound on the flute as well as how much air you can push through the instrument. (The Altus Z-cut has a lot of resistance in general and can be pushed to an extreme amount of air but there’s a lot of air needed to even play it.)

Great question. When you become more advanced, you typically will push more air through the instrument and it will then crack the sound. Having a metal that is more resistant means you can play with more air and not have it crack (for the most part 🤣)
