Very interesting! I have seen a lot on SCOM Managed Instance and what it is and does but nobody has really gone into how it's built and works within Azure. Very insightful!

My pleasure sir 😉

Awesome John, I assumed wrongly that this product was a hybrid solution giving a single pane of glass for onprem/cloud. Great to have a 20min sheep dip to that literally covers everything from capabilities, components to costs.

$6/mo/endpoint? Yikes! In a big environment (7000 servers), that's over $500K/yr. With a good enterprise license for SQL, you're WAY under that if you host on-prem. One of the big advantages to SCOM is that it's "free" beyond paying for the VMs for MS/GW and the SQL servers. Very cool explanation of it, btw.

I was going to say the same thing. Microsoft is just charging anything at this point

The idea is amazing, but the price is a complete roadblock for us. I made the calculations in my own currency, so this is just a rough estimation in $: - VM scaleset is around 500$/month - 6$ per source. Our tiny company with around 130 employees have 274 sources so 1644$/month - SQL Managed Instance is around 1000$/month So a total of more than 3000$/month, where our current onprem SCOM installation costs us maybe 250$/month. Please somebody tell me I made a mistake in my calculations and it's in fact really cheap? 😞

Great video John. Do SCOM MIs have any licensing rights for SQL, the same as on prem SCOM does? Or do you have to stump up the full cost of a SQL MI?

SQL MI is resource you create so regular license for SQL MI applies.
