I feel like there was a mistake made in this video. The data map runs on a single Capacity Unit at all times (at least for me). The price detail mentions you get 4 CU for free, but that does not mean it runs on 4. If you divide your final result of £734pm by 4 (£183) you'll get a more realistic price.

Hey Simon, think that the $12k per year is not terribly over inflated considering that Collibra has a base license commitment start around $150k to $250k per year (depending on who you speak to), likewise if you look at Alation they start with +-$190k per year for a 25 user license, you then need to add the connector licenses to that, and again depending on who you talk to some deals cost in the region of $1m per year.

That's the point, right - it depends on your relative positioning. If people compare it to the huge, enterprise governance tools it's relatively cheap & accessible. If they compare it to Azure Data Catalog Gen1, or some of the small elastic scaling Azure resources, it's pretty expensive. I think the main problem is targeting, in that it hasn't been very clear who Purview is aimed at, hence people being a little shocked by the cost. Will definitely be interesting to see if there are more small-scale, SME-focused pricing options that emerge over time!

I watched the presentation on Microsoft Mechanics where they said that it only really charges those VMs (Capacity Units) when they are in use. Presumably this would cut down on the monthly cost by quite a lot as stuff like off-hours utilization will be significantly less common, and this is the type of tool people wouldn't necessarily boot up and use all day. Just a thought

Hopefully! Would definitely be better if we see usage-based scaling of the pricing, from what I understood the scanning scales currently but not the CUs. But maybe that was wrong in the docs? Hoping we'll get some real clarity as the preview matures :) Simon

Hi, SImon, I setup a purview account, and I discovered that on Sunday at 20 pm the cost was very low (a quater of the price). Did you notice a difference between hours, and between week-ends and work days ?

So does Purview need to be on 24*7? isn't that the on demand cost? the current 24*7 USD cost is 1900$ a month. Like 1500 lb.. so that is "worse case"... Data Map population is serverless and billed based on the duration of scans (includes metadata extraction and classification) and ingestion jobs. Automated scans using native connectors trigger both scan and ingestion jobs. Push based updates from a Microsoft Purview client (e.g., lineage push from Azure Data Factory) only trigger ingestion jobs. Duration of these jobs can vary based on the number of systems scanned or pushing updates, data assets contained in the scanned systems, number of classifications selected, the shape of the data and performance of the system scanned.

There's an "always on" cost depending on how much storage you use, then a scaling additional charge if you do lots of transactions/scans/updates concurrently. There's more detail in this follow-up vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGKlhniLZZyjfbM
