I've read that John and Yoko saw them perform at CBGB in NYC sometime in 1979, and were so impressed that it motivated John to return to the studio and start recording again -- sadly short-lived.

John thought Kate's yodeling was directly influenced by Yoko. It was most likely a coincidence, but when the band learned that John dug the song solely for that reason, they said "oh, uh, yeah we're totally into Yoko's music haha" just to be considerate. Ironically, it was inspiration enough for John to continue songwriting again after about a 5 year hiatus.

Yes!!!! You don't need to analyze to enjoy the B52s! They're a party band and they take it very seriously. I recommend more from this era! Not to mention Van Halen and The Police debuting in 78 I think. Fleetwood Mac released Rumors the year prior which launched them exponentially the year prior. Gary Numan released his first album (which was important for the oncoming of New Wave). The Wall came out in 79. Plus you have guys like Weather Report pushing things even further than they already were going in the jazz world (and that's saying something given that these guys were experimenting with songs with no key around this time because they were so good they had pretty much mastered everything else). There was a lot going on and it was a fantastic time musically.

I remember seeing that performance on SNL, and I had only really been exposed to radio top 40 countdowns and adult contemporary so it was quite a shock. I give SNL a huge amount of credit for hosting the B52s, as well as Gary Numan, David Bowie and other obscure performers that helped pry open the music scene across the country.

Rock And Roll, is all about liberation, and then people applied that liberation, and then get something new, altogether. What I've seen, is that when a new mode is forming, it can be very accepting, to all things radical. For instance, Blondie picked up on things that were happening in the urban environment, and melded with hip-hop, when they made "Rapture". This concept, cracking the door to fringe voices, makes them less fringe. It builds bridges. It helps heal, or addresses, at least, what may require healing.

I remember seeing them at the Filmore in San Francisco in the 80s. The Filmore used to give out concert posters you pick up on the way out after the concert. Their poster had a picture of Barbie and Ken sitting naked in a bowl of jello. Barbie had a beehive haircut with a button in it that read: "Art is anything you can get away with." I think that sums up their style of music.

They released a total of 6 albums after the one this song was on, and have been continuously performing ever since (with minor breaks, and a two year hiatus after Ricky Wilson died in 1985). Heck, their last album (2008's Funplex) charted as high as 1989's Cosmic Thing. I've watched live concert footage from within the last three years. Not sure why you think tbey didn't last long.

I always kind of think this is inspired by the little things you put in fish tanks, like the little diver and the clam that opens and closes. What a wonderful band, What a wonderful song. One thing that is often overlooked, is Keith's drumming, It is just right for the group, & always tight. When the talented guitarist/songwriter (Ricky), passed away, the band were thinking of splitting up, as they would never get the same guitar sound. Keith taught himself to play in Ricky's style, so that the band could continue.

Oh does this song bring back memories... The time 1978... Location: NYC, Max's Kansas City which along with CBGBs was the epicenter of the American Punk and New wave movements. I was a 16 year old HS student who had some friends who were already in college. One of those college buddies was friends with someone who rented the entire floor above Max's (it was a vacant, roach infested, dance studio...) and threw "bring your own" parties until the building found a real tenant. We partied to the music coming thru the floor but we also would sneak downstairs and catch some of he shows if it wasn't to crowded (which we would do once we were completely blotto'd on cheap alcohol at the party).. One time we went downstairs and it was the B-52's playing... it was one of the first times they played in NYC. Thew show was beyond outrageous. I remember heckling the hell out of the guitarist, Ricky Wilson, for only having 4 strings on his guitar but that didn't last too long once their show took off. What a night....If I only knew back then how lucky I was to see some of the stuff I saw at some of these places...

So this particular clip is being played on rage, which is an Australian TV music program that runs overnight from like Fridays and Saturdays at 11pm or so and runs between 7 and 12 hours long. They are sort of famous because they play pretty eclectic mixes and have guests on who will pick songs, sort of like a radio station with videos. You know Jamel, their original guitarist, RIcky WIlson, brother of Cindy, one of the "trillers" is playing a four string guitar with a special tuning. That's how he gets that sound in the last part of the song that sounds like a distorted duck. I really love his guitar playing. He was really an underrated guitar player. I'm one of the few who do take their music seriously :)

I saw the B-52s about five years ago from the fifth row center. Absolute joy. Back in the clubs when this came out, we used to go down to the floor like Fred Schneider (the lead singer), and bounce up and just dance for joy. Wonderful memories. I saw them live 40 years ago tomorrow on March 3, 1982 in Lubbock TX. That night was a party. You could not stop dancing in the isles. Fun times and still remember that night vividly. Thanks for reminding me.

One of my favorite albums ever.. This was way before Love Shack. Basically a 60s beach blanket movie on acid. Pure party time and no, no point in trying to analyze the lyrics. Try Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around, 52 Girls, anything from this album or their other early albums.

I have always loved the B-52's my introduction to them was another song from about the same time called "Planet Claire" which while being different still has the same fun vibes to it. Although in Rock Lobster you only get to hear the girls make animal sounds they are really wonderful in many other songs when they sing in harmony. You may want to go back to the same album "Love Shack" was on and listen to "Roam" or "Deadbeat Club". You will never get bored listening to any of their songs.

Such a blast, like nothing I'd seen or heard before in my sheltered conservative home town. Later on I knew the pop culture styles genres and references that they were "pastiche"ing for the new punk scene. First time I heard Adam Ant too at that party. Got to go non-alcoholic wild. 😄

There’s another one that’s just as funny as this one and both of them have their own quirks. It’s another live version and even if you’ve seen all of them 10 times it’s still fun every time. The other ones a little bit longer I think but anybody that likes this will like the other version too.

Definitely a party band and a party song. Whenever this would start playing, EVERYBODY was on the floor dancing. Even had its own dance where you would make lobster claws. Next, you should do “Planet Claire”, “Private Idaho”, “Mesopotamia”, “Devil in My Car”, and/or “Give Me Back My Man”.

The B-52s are definitely one of the greatest party bands. I love their first 2 albums, and a smattering of songs off of their albums from the late 1980s/early 1990s. You definitely need to give Planet Claire, Strobe Light, and Roam a listen. While they were fun, they weren't without tragedy. Ricky Wilson, the guitarist and older brother of fellow band member, singer and incidental percussionist Cindy Wilson, died of AIDS in 1985. Cindy was quite devastated, and only played sporadically with The B-52s for the next several years. Cindy is often brunette, or wearing brunette wigs in the late 70s/early 80s, and typically platinum blonde in the late 80s/early 90s; as compared to Kate Pierson's red to auburn hair & wigs. Back in the day , Fred was a guest DJ at a radio event (WLIR) here in NY. Way late into the night , he plays this song and comes sprinting out of the DJ booth to dance with everyone to this song.. so there we all are , laying down on the floor during the “down..down!..” part , with Fred in the middle. Man..the 80’s were a party.
